During the Qianlong period, Yang, a magistrate of Yiwu, wrote in Wanshan Bridge that Fotang Town was "a town on all sides, with Jia leading the car and neighboring cities". It shows that Fotang Town was famous more than 220 years ago. By the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China, Buddhist temples had become one of the "four major towns in eastern Zhejiang".
