Can China be a soldier in the United States?
Those who sign up for the army must usually be citizens of American territories such as the United States or Guam or non-citizens holding American green cards. Non-citizens cannot be officers or work in some sensitive departments. However, active green card holders will speed up the process of applying for naturalization. Today, there are about 29,000 non-citizen fighters in the US military, and about 8,000 green card holders join the army every year. Since the terrorist attacks in 200 1 September11,nearly 43,000 members of the armed forces have obtained citizenship by serving the United States.
From June 5438 to February 2008, the Pentagon announced that the Ministry of National Defense had approved various services to implement pilot projects to recruit some foreigners without green cards to join the army. These recruits have mastered skills related to key national interests, including doctors, nurses and people familiar with certain languages and related cultural backgrounds, including foreigners who can speak more than 30 languages, including Arabic and Chinese. These foreigners must live legally in the United States for at least two years. The pilot project will last for one year, with a maximum of 1000 people.
