The original meaning of "Montevideo" is Portuguese "I see the mountain". MONTE is a "mountain" and VIDEO is "I saw it". It is said that in the 17th century, when the Portuguese expedition first arrived here, a sailor exclaimed when he found a hill only 139 meters above sea level in the northwest of the old city: "I saw the mountain", hence the name of Mengshi. But this theory is not recognized by academic circles. Montevideo began as a mixture of military fortress and port, with a long tradition of immigration. The city of Mong was built between 1726 and 173, when the Spanish Bruno Mauricio de Zabala established a military fortress here on Christmas Day in 1726 and settled 13 households.
