It was once a prosperous city in ancient Rome because of its purple color, and it also fought bloody battles in the famous land-sea war in history. Now, it has become a place of war.
Now the ancient city of Tyre is in ruins, and the roads and arches of Rome are faintly visible. In Roman times, the ancient city of Tyre was famous for a purple dye extracted from seashells by the sea, which was considered as a color that only the royal family could have.
The ancient city of Tyre is located about 80 kilometers south of Beirut, the capital of Lebanon. 1984 UNESCO listed the ancient city of Tyre as a cultural heritage in the World Heritage List.
Large-scale maritime trade has made Tyre the most important trade center in the eastern Mediterranean. Tyre is a magnificent ancient Phoenician city, which once dominated the Mediterranean region, ruled the prosperous colonies such as Gabes and Maddick, and gradually declined after the Crusades.
Tyre City was founded in 2750 BC, which initially included a mainland settlement and a medium-sized island city not far from the shore. In 1000 BC, King Elo of Tyre connected the two parts of the city by reclamation, and created a considerable area of land in the sea around the city. This not only expanded the city's territory, but also made Tyre the most important trade center in the Eastern Mediterranean. At this time, the city reached its peak.
In 8 15 BC, merchants from Tyre established Carthage in North Africa, which marked the beginning of Phoenician expansion. Then in a very short time, Tyre's colonies spread all over the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts, and numerous colonies made Tyre's maritime trade unprecedentedly prosperous. At this time, the prosperous Mediterranean city of Tyre began to attract the attention of expansionists and became a battleground in the eyes of colonists. At the beginning of the 6th century BC, the king of Babylon led an army to attack Tyre and besieged it for 13 years.
In the 4th century BC, Alexander the Great finally conquered the city and destroyed half of it after seven months of blockade. In 63 BC, all ancient Syria, including Tyre, fell into the hands of the Romans. During the reign of the Roman Empire, Tyre experienced a period of relative prosperity, and many important historical sites were built in the city. Today, the buildings left over from this period are mainly preserved in archaeological sites. Till Byzantine period, Tyre still occupied an important position in maritime trade, and its dye trade was still prosperous. The monuments built by the Romans in the city now mainly include the Roman Ambassador Column Street, the magnificent Arc de Triomphe, baths, theaters and chariot arenas. Among them, the chariot arena is the most famous and one of the largest arenas in Roman times.
