TESOL certificate to find out.

Text/Qiao Feng

Some people say that it is not true that China people teach English in Canada. In fact, in this immigrant country, many people's mother tongue is not English. For example, in Toronto, nearly half of the people were not born locally. In order to help new immigrants adapt to life and help their children keep up with their studies, the profession of ESL teacher came into being.

The full name of ESL is English as a second language, which refers to non-native speakers who use English as a second language. Teacher ESL is responsible for teaching students whose mother tongue is not English. Although most of them speak English as their mother tongue, it will come in handy if some new immigrants have a poor English foundation and can't communicate in English. If ESL teachers can speak students' mother tongue at this time. Therefore, as international students and new immigrants, there will also be a place. It is worth mentioning that IELTS teachers are also ESL teachers, and China is good at exam-oriented training, so many institutions also employ China teachers to help students improve their grades.

TESOL certificate is equivalent to ESL teacher's teacher qualification certificate, which can increase employment opportunities. I didn't go home last summer because of the epidemic, so I stayed and got this certificate.

Before signing up, I searched online. TESOL certificate items are varied, ranging from several hundred to several thousand RMB. Later, I probably studied it and found that the difference between cheap and expensive is mainly as follows:

1. Those with cheap tuition fees generally have no teacher's guidance, and they mainly study by themselves; Expensive is generally expensive because there are tutors.

2. The cheap ones are generally online self-study and get an electronic certificate, while the expensive ones are generally on-site study and can get a paper certificate.

3. Cheap ones are generally tracked by themselves, and the learning rhythm is completely mastered by themselves. It may be as expensive as full-time study for a while.

4. Paper certificates have higher gold content. If you are going to some physical institutions or international schools, you may need to provide proof. Electronic teaching is more convenient and quick, and it is suitable for applying for online teaching positions.

As for which one to choose, it depends on personal needs. Some English-speaking people with poor economic conditions will study for hundreds of dollars soon, and it is not difficult to find a job directly in developing countries after studying.

Entrance threshold:

1. Either one is the minimum requirement, bachelor degree.

2. For non-native speakers, it seems that the requirements for IELTS scores in online courses are generally low.

Entities have requirements for IELTS scores. For example, according to the requirement written by official website, the IELTS for non-native speakers in the local Canadian language center I chose should have four 7s.

Just before my A-level IELTS score in China expired, I signed up for full-time study in May-June.

Tuition:

Because I personally think that the paper contains more gold, I chose a local regular college, and the registration fee is 1500 yuan (distressed). At the same time, the teaching department I choose can teach adult ESL students, and both adults and minors can teach in the future. I also have friends who reported hundreds of projects online.

learning process

Because of the epidemic, our class is online, but there are teachers in the whole class. 100 hours of theoretical study plus 20 hours of internship (this time also changed to online). Finally, the teacher scored, and the course and internship passed before getting the certificate.

Learning difficulty:

Theoretical study is homework+quiz. The quiz is basically unlimited, as long as you pass. Homework needs to meet basic requirements. The workload is quite large, but it is not difficult. The test is attitude.

Internship is to teach ESL students, send lesson plans and courseware to the supervisor in advance, and then the supervisor will grade your class. As long as the expression is smooth, you can generally pass without any serious injuries. This time, I was assigned to teach a group of adult students in Brazil. Everything was fine, and finally the internship passed smoothly.

After more than a month's study, there are only seven or eight students in this class, most of whom are local whites, and only me and another student are international students. There are two instructors, one is casual and a little watery, and the other is serious in class and often drags off classes, so it's just a balance and a little easier every day. Then the supervisor I chose is very experienced in teaching (I need to listen to several different ESL teachers before, and then choose one as your supervisor).

Employment prospects:

Although the institution offering this certificate program still aims at making money and has a strong business atmosphere, it feels that the overall cost performance is ok, which is helpful for students to find jobs in the future.

Because I did search on it, local ESL teachers or IELTS teachers in Canada generally need Tesol or Tefl certificates when recruiting, so it is a stepping stone.

Take a job advertisement I saw on the Internet as an example:

This hourly wage is already very high, generally starting at around 20 yuan/hour, which may increase year by year according to the qualifications of teachers.

It is worth mentioning that public schools in Canada also have ESL teacher positions, but they need teacher qualification certificates, such as Ontario Certified Teacher (OCT), which can only be obtained by participating in a teacher education program. Then go to the public education bureau for an interview. After that, we should start with the substitute teacher and wait for the opportunity to become a full member. During the epidemic, there were many opportunities for online teaching. The so-called skills are not overwhelming. It will be of great use, especially for liberal arts students, to learn more skills and pass the examination.
