Cobain’s music

Nirvana (Nirvana) lead singer Kurt Cobain (Kurt·Cobain)

Kurt Cobain (Kurt·Cobain)

1. Childhood

p>

Kurt was born on February 20, 1967, in Aberdeen, Washington State, Western United States. Aberdeen is a small, not-so-prosperous city, less than a hundred miles away from Seattle. But the suicide rate in Aberdeen is among the highest in the country. This is where Kurt grew up.

Kurt’s family is relatively well-off in the local area: his father Donald Cobain and his mother Wendy Cobain plus Kurt and his sister, a family of four, with a large number of relatives such as aunts and uncles, so Kurt once recalled He "is an extremely happy child".

In 1975, when Kurt was just 8 years old, his parents divorced due to emotional rift. They were busy arguing about property, leaving young Kurt looking on with confusion.

This was the first major event in Kurt's life. From then on, Kurt, who was originally lively and loved to perform, changed. He was introverted and kept everything only in his heart. Most of the musicians who have stayed in NirVaNa since then come from divorced families.

Ah... Then, Kurt started to like playing with the scruffy poor kids on the street because "they were cool." Prior to this, his mother Wendy had always opposed Kurt's "lowering of self-worth" and interacting with the lower class.

Kurt began to disobey his parents, wander around, and skip classes... In the eyes of others, he became a problem child.

In elementary school, Kurt aspired to be a star, like John Lennon. He started practicing drums and even joined the elementary school band, but he could never learn to read music.

After his parents divorced, he learned to use music as both an escape and a weapon.

February 20, 1981, Kurt’s 14th birthday. He got a second-hand electric guitar as a birthday present. From then on Kurt put down the drums and picked up the guitar.

Hmm... At that time, Kurt could not find real punk music tapes in the small town where he lived, and the punk in his mind was nothing more than the addition of three major triads with the electric guitar volume turned to the maximum. Shout at the top of your lungs.

Maybe Kurt couldn't be called a punk at the time, but he had been a deformed person since he was a child. He was incompatible with the future his parents had arranged for him, and he was incompatible with that depressing small town. He was obsessed with music, painting and singing. His aura and sensitivity freed his mind, and his soul finally found a refuge that was warmer than his broken family. He looked forward to one day leaving all this and devoting himself to the destination at the end of the confusion.

2. Small town

High school. Start smoking marijuana.

In the summer of 1985, Kurt, who was about to graduate from high school, dropped out of school. His mother and teachers couldn't understand. Kurt's art teacher in high school was extremely impressed by the "anger" in his paintings, so with his help Kurt has received scholarships from several universities, and it is no problem to enter higher education.

Kurt's mother Wendy asked him what he planned to do. Kurt said he would make a living from music. Wendy sneered at this and asked Kurt to find a job to make a living, otherwise she would not be prepared to raise a "musician". Kurt still plays guitar at home all day long. Finally one day he came home and found all his things in a box on the dining room floor.

Kurt moved to his father's house. His stepmother and father persuaded him to take the Navy draft exam. He was accepted, but before signing, he packed up his things and left his father's house.

He was finally homeless and wandered the suffocating streets of Aberdeen. When he was sleepy, he curled up and fell asleep in the bridge hole of Aberdeen's North Bridge. Here he read the works of Arthur Rimbaud (Rimbaud), William Burroughs (?), and S.E. Hinton (?) with the lingering sun. In the windy, rainy and cold night, he lay in the pit looking forward to the warmth of the sunrise. When he was hungry, he fished some small fish from the dark green water of the Wisika River to satisfy his hunger: Many years later, the graffiti and words Kurt left on the North Bridge pier will be composed into a beautiful song called "something in the way."

In those days, Kurt got acquainted with a real rock band for the first time, the Melvins, although they were still limited to covering songs of famous people. Most importantly, he began to enter the world of punk and came into contact with the original rhythms that had a great influence on him. Then, he followed the members of the Melvins around, learning their rehearsals, secretly writing some songs on his own, doing nothing, graffiti, loitering, sleeping on the streets, and music.

At the end of 1985, Kurt began rehearsing his own work with Dale Crover and Greg Hokanson. He named his first band Fecal Matter. Later the band recorded a demo, Kurt's first official demo. At that time, Kurt had not yet formed, and the noise + heavy metal rhythm was actually not Kurt's autistic heart.

3. Breaking out of the cocoon

Fecak Matter soon became unsustainable. It's very natural. But Kurt has grown up during this period, and more importantly, he met his best friend Chris Novaselic, who would later be the bass master of Nirvana.

Chris sometimes spells his name as Krist, just like Kurt likes to use Kurdt, and Cobain is also Kobain.

Krist was born in Compton, California on May 16, 1965. His parents were immigrants from Croatia. The family moved to Aberdeen in 1979. Like Kurt, Krist is quiet, dull, and only likes to listen to rock music. His parents divorced in 1983, and he graduated from high school with nothing to do and stayed at home to practice guitar. Rehearsing at the Melvins led him to meet Kurt, and the two fell in love and became best friends.

Then they started rehearsing together. Since only one person they knew, Aron Burckhard, had his own drum set, the three of them formed a band.

But...the three people have different musical concepts. Krist likes hippie and psychedelic rock in the 1960s, while Kurt is an out-and-out punk die-hard. Aron's hobby is mainstream heavy metal, and he has no interest in punk.

Despite this, they still practice day and night and wait for when there will be a performance.

Olympia, a city 50 kilometers away from Aberdeen, is the capital of Washington state and the local cultural center. Underground music is quietly growing there.

Kurt once sang his poem to the audience for the first time here - but he was so nervous that almost no one in the audience noticed the yell of the yellow-haired boy on the stage. There were some exceptions. Dylan Calson and Slim Moon noticed Kurt's sensitive temperament that was not fully revealed but could not be concealed. After Kurt finished singing, he came over and said to him that this was very flavorful. From then on they became lifelong friends. These two people are figures in the Olympia underground music circle.

Kurt calls them Calvinists: their flagship figure, Calvin Johnson of Beat Happening, promotes a "natural, harmonious, childlike" outlook on life. .

Kurt likes them because they are connected deep in their souls. From then on Kurt frequently traveled between Aberdeen and Olympia.

Then there was the first show. In the small town of Raymond, he warmed up for a metal band. But this is just Kurt venting his dissatisfaction on the middle-class yuppies. It was back to Olympia that I really sang my own song: in the Gescco Auditorium where Kurt once took the stage, there were only ten people in the audience. When the performance started, emotions were high and excitement was high on and off the stage. Kurt saw the power of his music.

4. Single

As for Kurt’s first band, there were many different names: initially Skid Row; then Throat Oyster, Pen Cap Chew, WindowPane, Ted Ed Fred... and finally Nirvana.

Nirvana, transliteration of Sanskrit, the ultimate purpose of Buddhism. In fact, Buddhist terms are very fashionable in Western rock circles, and Kurt and Krist are inevitably affected. But it is indeed an outstanding name, and Kurt's life seems to be destined to be here.

Gradually, the band began to gain support. People liked this silent blond guy, and some came to watch them rehearse. Kurt had his first girlfriend, Tracy Maramder, who lived in Olympia. When Kurt was kicked out by his landlord in Aberdeen, Tracy asked him to move there, so Kurt had a nest for the first time. Kurt insisted on sharing part of the rent with the money from the band's occasional performances, but Tracy thought it was better for him to find a job. Kurt was about to go out in anger when he heard this, and Tracy lost his temper later.

But Kurt finally went to work; he drove a shabby car to deliver goods with two other colleagues every day, but he soon He was fed up. The two tall colleagues were very dissatisfied with him, and he said, "I can't get along with those two common people."

His stomach was damaged during this time. This will be unbearable pain that will torture him in the future and even induce him to die. He can only use narcotics to numb himself, or even drugs.

On January 23, 1988, Nirvana recorded its first demo. The location was the cheapest "associated" recording studio in the city, and the recording engineer was Jack Endinno, one of the godfathers of underground music in Seattle. Nirvana was extremely proud of this demo. Kurt said: "This is indeed good music." Endinno also liked the demo and sent one of the demos to Jonathan Poneman, who had just founded the "Underground Pop" company with Bruce Pavitt a few months ago and was in urgent need of some new bands to expand the team. When Poneman heard the demo, he was immediately impressed by Kurt's voice.

He brought Nirvana's demo tape to the Music Broadcasting Network Company and enthusiastically recommended Nirvana to his friends there: "This band is looking for a drummer. Anyone who wants to make a fortune should join this band." But the insiders there It's not a good market to think that Nirvana is too outlandish. Pavitt thought Nirvana was too 'rock' and not 'underground' enough.

Kurt sent the demo tape around to every independent record company he knew. He sent out about 20 demo tapes and received a slew of replies and assorted little gifts, including dolls, candy, and old condoms filled with fake ants, but no audition notices or anything he craved. invite.

In the end, Poneman called Kurt. Poneman sees Kurt as a very shy and humble young man. But Krist was drunk and acting recklessly. Poneman tried his best to calm down, ignore Krist, and convince Nirvana to release a single in the near future.

The next most important thing for Nirvana was to find a suitable drummer. For Aron, he only participated in the rehearsals for fun and did not commit to such hard work. He remains at Aberdeen and hopes to become a manager one day. Gradually Kurt lost contact with him.

The next drummer is Dave Foster. Kurt thought he was average, but still accepted him. But soon he was sentenced to one year in prison for offending the mayor's son. Kurt had no choice but to invite Aron back, but his old habit of not attending rehearsals returned. So the successor was Chad Channing, who also came from a family with separated parents and dropped out of high school like Kurt.

On June 11, 1988, Nirvana recorded their first single, Love Buzz. Side B is Big Cheese. Although Kurt was very dissatisfied that his first single was a cover work, the temptation of the recording studio finally overwhelmed everything.

In November 1988, Love Buzz/Big Cheese was launched.

The underground pop company adopted a new promotional method for distribution: they printed only one thousand single records, hand-numbered and limited to pre-orders. Sure enough the move made the single a success. At the end of 1988, Kurt and Tracy went to Seattle to play and heard Love Buzz being played on the radio. They were extremely excited. He never thought that he would reach this point: this was a success beyond his greatest ambition.

5. Tour

On December 24, 1988, Nirvana began the recording of their first album, and by January of the following year, the recording was completed. What Endinno showed them was the recording fee of ***606.17$. No one at NirVaNa could afford the "huge sum", so Chad's friend Jason Everman paid the bill.

In February 1989, the band began a small tour on the West Coast of the United States. It happened that Kurt was very unaccustomed to memorizing lyrics while playing guitar and singing, so NirVaNa temporarily had a second guitarist, Jason Everman. He had a good guitar, long hair, and came from a family with divorced parents. He also lived in Aberdeen.

During the tour, they were inspired by a public service billboard and named their debut album "Bleach".

Bleach was officially released in June 1989. It was not favored at first, but the social nerves were mobilized and it began to sell well day by day. In just a few months, it actually sold more than 35,000 copies, setting a new record for an underground pop company.

Starting from Bleach, a new kind of music gradually emerged and gained a firm foothold.

The first national tour followed. This was a "hungry punk rock tour" (Krist's term) that included 26 shows, the first of which was held in San Francisco on June 22, 1989. Lacking the money to hire an agent, they arranged the entire process themselves. For a small band just starting out, touring can be arduous and even brutal. However, these guys can still enjoy the hardships: "We are poor, but my God, we can see the whole United States for the first time."

What's more important is that they are gradually gaining an audience. The university radio station started playing About a Girl, Blew, School, etc. During the tour, the audience would come backstage and say to them: "Man, you guys are so cool."

Another gain is that they have also developed the habit of smashing things up on stage. So the further the car drives, the less and less their possessions become.

This kind of smashing and throwing behavior did not bring too much trouble to the band. The real problem was that the rift between Kurt, Krist and Jason was getting more and more intense. Jason's style is very mainstream. He likes to look like a rock star, posing and flipping his long hair.

Kurt couldn't stand his coyness. "He wanted us to be more rock 'n' roll, but we wanted to be more punk." Krist put it bluntly.

Jason made no secret that he liked metal rock. He believed that Kurt "wouldn't be too different from any other drummer or bassist on his songs."

It was precisely because of the huge differences in musical concepts that Jason finally left Nirvana. He later served as guitarist in several metal bands.

As the tour continued Kurt's stomach began to deteriorate. When he finally persisted until the end, he started touring Europe again. They performed 36 shows in 42 days and received an unexpected welcome in Europe, with the performances sold out.

Smells Like A Teen Spirit

Load up on guns and, Bring your friends, It's fun to lose, And to pretend

She's over bored, And self assured,Oh no, I know, A dirty word

hello, how low? (x bunch of times)

With the lights out it's less dangerous

Here we are now, Entertain us

I feel stupid and contagious

Here we are now, Entertain us

A mulatto, An albino, A mosquito, My Libido, Yeah

I'm worse at what I do best,And for this gift I feel blessed

Our little group has always been, And always will until the end

hello, how low? (x bunch of times)

With the lights out it's less dangerous

Here we are now, Entertain us

I feel stupid and contagious

Here we are now, Entertain us

A mulatto, An albino, A mosquito, My Libido, Yeah

And I forget, Just why I taste,Oh yeah, I guess it makes me smile

I found it hard, It was hard to find, Oh well, whatever, nevermind

hello, how low? (x bunch of times)

With the lights out it's less dangerous

Here we are now, Entertain us

I feel stupid and contagious

Here we are now, Entertain us

A mulatto, An albino, A mosquito, My Libido

A denial, A denial, A denial, A denial,

A denial, A denial, A denial, A denial,A denial
