Cyril Birch was born in Lancashire, England in 1925. He studied China at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, and received his PhD in Chinese Literature in 1954. He served at his alma mater in China from 1948 to 1960. He joined the Department of Oriental Languages ??at UC Berkeley in 1960, where he was later appointed professor and chair of Chinese and Comparative Literature. After his retirement in 1991, he was appointed professor emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley.

Birch is a Cyrillic author of books and articles on traditional Chinese novels and dramas, as well as modern Chinese literature. He was a famous translator of plays and stories in the Ming Dynasty. The Peony Pavilion, which he translated (scenes four, seven, nine, and ten), and three chapters from the Letters of the Swallow were published in Translation Series Nos. 3 and 40 respectively.

Although Cyril Birch has edited and written numerous collections of Chinese literature, his favorite style remains classical drama. The exhibits shown here represent one of his scholarships from the 1990s, dedicated to traditional Chinese drama that culminated in a lifetime of best-known works.
