Dr. Watling, a researcher at the Archaeological Museum of the University of S? o Paulo, led the team to do this research when studying for a doctoral degree at the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom. She said: "This study proves that the rainforest is not as devoid of human activities as previously thought. Before the arrival of Europeans, the indigenous people were already managing the rainforest."

Watling stressed that although research has proved that there have been human activities in the rainforest for a long time, this should not be an excuse for excessive logging at present, but should examine the sustainable use of land by indigenous people.
