Handwritten newspaper about Women’s Day
International Women’s Day is a holiday for women all over the world. This date was determined in a United Nations resolution statement in December 1977. Although the statement emphasizes that the specific day of the United Nations Day for Women's Rights and Peace is subject to the history and traditions of each member state, the United Nations itself sets International Women's Day on March 8 and has been recognized since 1975. This statement of the United Nations is recognized by many countries in the world, and Women's Day has become a legal holiday in many countries.
As for why the United Nations decided to designate this day as International Women’s Day, it has a historical evolution process.
In 1909, according to the announcement of the American Socialist Party, the first International Women's Day, February 28, was designated as the last Sunday in February in the United States until 1913.
At the Socialist International Conference held in Copenhagen in 1910, it was decided to establish a Women's Day as a tribute to the outstanding achievements of the women's movement. The plan was specified by more than 100 women from 17 countries, including the first three women to gain the right to vote in the Finnish Parliament. But an exact date was not set at that meeting.
In 1911, Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland designated Women's Day as March 19, and more than one million people participated in rallies on that day. In addition to demanding the right to vote and government offices, they also demand equal opportunities for work and employment training, and the elimination of gender discrimination at work.
Less than a week later, a tragedy occurred in New York on March 25. A fire killed more than 140 female workers, most of whom were Italian and Jewish immigrants. This incident put tremendous pressure on the U.S. government. The disaster caused by poor working conditions could not be ignored, and the establishment of International Women's Day was put on the table.
In the midst of the peace movement on the eve of World War I, Russian women celebrated their first holiday on the last Sunday of February 1913. Elsewhere in Europe, in subsequent years, women always held rallies around March 8 to express their determination to unite and resist the war.
In 1917, more than two million Russian soldiers died in the war, and Russian women once again chose to strike for "Bread and Peace" on the last Sunday in February. Despite government opposition, women took to the streets. Four days later the Tsar had to abdicate, and the Provisional Government granted women the right to vote. This historic Sunday falls on February 23 on the Roman Gregorian calendar, but on March 8 on the solar calendar used in other countries.
In general, March 8th Festival was formed during the struggle of women from various countries for equality, justice, peace and development. It is for this reason that South Africa’s International Women’s Day is different from other countries in the world and is set on August 9th. On August 9, 1956, hundreds of black women held a demonstration in Pretoria to protest against the authorities' implementation of the apartheid "Pass Law". The new South African government later designated this day as Women's Day to commemorate the contribution of South African women in the struggle for equality.
In Hong Kong movies, women are called "dead three-eight", "stinky three-eight" and so on. Here "three-eight" is just a synonym for "woman" and should be a neutral term in itself, so swearing is usually Derogatory words such as "dead" and "stinky" should be added. As for the fact that most of them criticize mainland women, I think it’s because mainland women seem a little more rustic in Hong Kong.
