Why does Guanyin live in the South China Sea?

In the Five Dynasties, 9 16 AD, something happened. One day, Hui Huan, a Japanese monk, came to Wutai Mountain in Shanxi and saw an icon of Guanyin, pure and solemn, and admired him very much. I really want to discuss with the abbot of the temple to let him go back to Japan to support me, but I'm afraid they won't allow me, so I plan to take it away secretly. Will this violate the "stealing precepts" in Buddhism? He didn't care so much, so he secretly took the icon away.

Since he got this priceless icon, of course, he didn't dare to stay in Wutai Mountain for a long time, so he immediately bought a boat to cross to the east and prepared to return home. When the ship sailed to Zhoushan Islands, Dinghai County, Zhejiang Province, countless iron lotus flowers suddenly appeared in the ocean, blocking the ship's route and unable to move forward. After three days and three nights' advance, retreat and retreat, the ship could not leave, but circled around Putuo Mountain. At this time, the monk Huihuan was uneasy. He asked himself that he had never done anything ulterior in his life. Why is he trapped in the sea today? When he knelt in front of the Bodhisattva statue and repented, he suddenly remembered that the Bodhisattva had been secretly taken away. He suddenly realized that Guanyin refused to "smuggle" Japan in this way, so monk Hui 'e stopped at the Yin Chao Cave and landed.

At that time, Mount Putuo was still a desert island with no one in the wild. Only a few fishermen, fishing for a living, set up several thatched tents on the mountain and lived in a ravine by the sea. After searching by boat for a long time, monk Huihuan found a fisherman's hut near Yin Chao Cave. The owner of the hut is a fisherman Zhang who makes a living by fishing. When monk Huihuan explained his purpose, the fisherman was greatly moved and delighted. He thinks this barren mountain is related to the Bodhisattva. So he said, "Since people in your country have no chance to see the Buddha, you can live on our mountain with the Bodhisattva. I'll give up the house where you live, and you can build a temple to worship the bodhisattva. " So, monk Hui 'e stopped going back to Japan, so he built a buddhist nun on the mountain and settled down. His name is "Refuse to go to Kannonji". The incense of this mountain is growing, and more Buddhist temples and temples have been built one after another.

Although this is a legend, it is highly credible. Otherwise, it is really difficult to explain why there are many islands in Zhoushan Archipelago, and Putuo Mountain is not the largest or the highest, and why it has become the official venue of Guanyin. Guanyin insisted on staying on this desert island, even if she lived in a hut. This statement also delighted monks and nuns in Putuo Mountain area. Therefore, the legend of "wisdom starts the mountain" has become the official statement of Putuo Mountain's cause, which has spread widely.

Putuo is the abbreviation of Hindi, and its full name is Putuo lorca. People in China like to name it with two words, often referred to as Putuo or lorca, which have become two names over time. In order to maintain the integrity of the name, an island opposite Mount Putuo is called Luojia Mountain.
