Introduction to the four major language majors provided by the University of Hong Kong

Currently, the language majors that Hong Kong universities can offer include: English majors (English literature, professional English, English writing, etc.), Chinese majors (Chinese language and literature, Chinese studies, etc.), teaching majors (English education, teaching Chinese as a foreign language), There are four majors in translation.

1. English major

Application requirements: Bachelor’s degree in this major or a related major, or a bachelor’s degree in other majors, with strong language ability.

Language requirements: IELTS 7.0 (minimum score is no less than 6.5); some majors require IELTS 7.5.

Pure English majors are relatively boring. Since most mainland students studying English majors as undergraduates have the need to change majors, the application rate for such majors is not high. This major has the highest language requirements for applicants. During the application process, all English documents are reviewed very strictly. You need to attend a school interview. The applicant's language ability must be genuine and can stand the test. Students who are not majoring in English can also apply boldly, provided that your language skills are quite good.

2. Chinese Major

Application requirements: Bachelor’s degree in this major or a related major, or a bachelor’s degree in other majors.

Language requirements: IELTS 6 or above, or a Mandarin proficiency certificate is required (some schools teach in Chinese).

It is relatively easy for mainland students to apply for Chinese language-related majors. After all, Chinese is our mother tongue. Of course, for applicants who are not majoring in this major, they need a sincere and well-founded personal statement, so that the Hong Kong school can recognize our motivation to study Chinese in Hong Kong. We must not let the school feel that we are going to Hong Kong. I had no choice but to major in Chinese. In addition, it is strongly recommended that all applicants from the south of the Yangtze River or whose Mandarin is not very standard provide a Mandarin proficiency certificate, Level 2 or above is sufficient, and they must practice Mandarin diligently, otherwise they will definitely be in big trouble during the school interview.

3. Teaching majors

Application requirements: Bachelor’s degree in this major or a related major, with teaching experience preferred; or bachelor’s degree in a non-major with rich teaching experience.

Language requirements: English education (IELTS 6.5), Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (IELTS 5.5 and above, some schools teach in Chinese).

These two majors belong to the education category, and some schools set these two majors as two directions for the Master of Education. Applicants applying for these two majors must have teaching-related experience, such as teachers, tutors, or working in private training institutions. Applicants should preferably have a teacher qualification certificate, and applicants majoring in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language should preferably provide a Mandarin proficiency certificate. When applying for this major, you must make it clear that teaching experience is preferred over academic background.

4. Translation Major

Application requirements: Bachelor’s degree in this major or related major; or bachelor’s degree in other majors, with strong language ability.

Language requirements: IELTS 6.5.

The translation major in Hong Kong focuses on theory, so those applicants who are interested in written translation, interpretation, simultaneous interpretation, etc. will be a little disappointed! The translation major does not have strict professional requirements for applicants. Undergraduate studies in English As well as majors in linguistics such as various minor languages, or applicants with very good IELTS scores can apply for the translation major. In addition, what needs to be mentioned is the Computer-Assisted Translation major of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Many applicants are worried whether this major is mainly focused on computers. To paraphrase the words of the school teacher, this major allows students to focus on becoming a translator. Therefore, all "brain blind" people can apply with confidence.
