The earliest record of Singapore in history was in the 3rd century. At that time, people knew little about Singapore, and China called Singapore Prolong (meaning "the island at the end of the peninsula"). By the14th century, Singapore had become a part of a powerful Sri Lankan country.

As Singapore is located at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, it is the only place for sailing, so China's sailboats, Indian ships, Arabian dhows, Portuguese warships and Buji's dhows keep visiting. Therefore, people also appropriately call her Temasek (meaning "Haicheng").
