The lake area has used semi-natural ecological forestry wetlands to successfully create a variety of three-dimensional ecological forestry systems for forest farmers, forests, fish, ducks, and birds, which has been designated as a national-level scientific research achievement. Due to its special geographical location and its importance to the protection of biodiversity in the Yangtze River Basin, Zhangdu Lake was selected as a demonstration project for the WWF HSBC Yangtze River Project and became the first wetland in Hubei Province to be protected by a global environmental organization. In July 2004, it was approved by the Wuhan Municipal Government as a municipal wetland nature reserve with a total area of ??18,500 hectares. It mainly protects aquatic and terrestrial plants and their wetland ecosystems. Currently, there are 115 families of vascular plants, 101 families of gymnosperms, 10 species of amphibians, 16 species of reptiles, 20 species of mammals, 103 species of birds, and 46 species of fish in the reserve. There are also a small number of globally endangered species in the reserve.
