Australia's new visa policy

Time of scholarship study abroad network: September 2008-1 1

According to the latest news from the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC), Australia has readjusted the evaluation level of student visas in various countries and relaxed the student visa policy. The following two types of visas in China have been adjusted from AL4 to AL3:

Category 570- Independent ELICOS (Intensive English Course for Overseas Students)

Core Tip: IELTS scores are no longer required to apply for a 570 visa.

Category 575- Non-academic courses only include some basic, transitional or other preparatory courses, such as undergraduate or master's preparatory courses. After completing the course, you can't get a degree, diploma or other formal certificate.

Core Tip: The IELTS requirement for applying for a 575 visa has been reduced from 5.0 to 4.5, and the longest supported English course allowed has been increased from 20 weeks to 30 weeks.

This policy will take effect on September 1 2008.

Introduction of background knowledge:

Australian student visas are divided into seven categories according to the main courses of study:

Category 570- Independent ELICOS (Intensive English Course for Overseas Students);

57 1 category-middle school curriculum (high school curriculum);

Category 572- Vocational Education and Training Courses (VET)-Diploma, Advanced Diploma and Level 4 Certificate;

Category 573- higher education courses-including bachelor's degree, associate's degree, postgraduate certificate, postgraduate diploma and master's degree (teaching style);

Category 574-research-oriented postgraduate courses-includes master's degree (research-oriented) and doctoral degree;

Class 575-non-academic courses, including only some basic, transitional or other preparatory courses, and you can't get a degree, diploma or other formal certificates after completing the course;

Category 576-AusAID (Australian Agency for International Development) or DOD-funded courses-All or part of full-time education or training courses provided by Australian educational institutions are attended by AusAID students or DOD-funded students.

Category 580- Guardian Visa (the applicant is the parent of a student under the age of 18, accompanying him to Australia for guardianship work).

200 1 Australian student visa regulations define different countries as different visa assessment levels (AL for short) according to the so-called risk degree of the students' country of origin, and one is divided into five levels. Evaluation grade 1 means the lowest risk. The higher the assessment level, the higher the risk, and the stricter the requirements for visa application, including financial resources, English, education and so on. For students from Chinese mainland, except for 574 and 576 visas, which are Grade 3 and Grade 2 respectively, all other types of visas belong to Grade 4, that is, the highest risk level in the actual situation.

Impact analysis:

The Australian government's new policy of changing the assessment level of 570 and 575 visas from the original level 4 to level 3 is great news for China students, especially those whose IELTS scores have not yet reached 5. This is mainly reflected in the following points:

1, IELTS scores no longer need to apply for a 570 visa, which means that students without English scores can apply for an independent intensive English course visa to study English courses in Australia first, and then apply for a main course visa after their English scores meet the requirements. This avoids the situation that many students want to study in Australia, but their IELTS scores can't meet the requirements of visa application, and provides more students with the opportunity to study in Australia.

At the same time, people from all walks of life who want to go to Australia for gold plating can sign up for independent English intensive classes without any language performance restrictions.

2. We know that to apply for preparatory courses (including intensive English classes, pre-university courses or other preparatory courses) plus supporting/packaged courses for the main courses, in most cases, you have to apply for a student visa in the category where the main courses are located; For example, to apply for an intensive English class plus an undergraduate course, you must apply for a 573 student visa; Only when the applicant can submit the electronic registration confirmation notice (eCOE) of the applied main course and preparatory course/English intensive course to the visa office can he obtain a student visa with the validity covering the whole support/package course. The IELTS requirement for applying for a 575 visa has been reduced from 5.0 to 4.5, which means that students with an IELTS score of only 4.5 can apply for a 575 visa first, and then apply for an Australian undergraduate or master's visa after studying English and matriculation in Australia. Most universities in Australia have preparatory courses or bridge courses, and some postgraduate courses also have preparatory courses (such as QPP courses in QIBT). Therefore, the decline in language performance undoubtedly provides more flexible study abroad programs for more students.

In short, the adjustment of 570 and 575 visa assessment grades has brought more opportunities to the domestic study abroad market, and I hope more students can make new attempts.
