Borderlands game introduction
While most real-time strategy games today focus on fantasy and science fiction themes, the German development team Related Designs is unique and has developed several new games based on American history. The studio's first real-time strategy game, "America," takes place in the American West during the pioneering period, when settlers often had to compete with Mexicans and Indians for land. The studio's new game, No Man's Land, returns to the pre-American West and still includes early immigration. The final setting of the game is from the founding of the colony in the 16th century to the large-scale settlement in the 19th century, covering a wide range of historical eras.
We recently had the opportunity to try out the build of No Man's Land, a trial version that included the game's six different factions: British, Spanish, Woodland and Prairie Indians, Patriots, and Settlers, each faction has a quest to complete. These different levels give us a look at the various different types of missions in the game. For example, the missions of the Indians and settlers provide standard base construction and search and destruction settings. The missions of the Spanish are more covert operations. We can only control two elite troops to sneak into the fortifications and start from the British planting. Freed some slaves. The British mission included a naval battle, while the Patriot mission was to hold the Rebel forts against a tidal wave of British troops and artillery.
"No Man's Land" will have three major campaigns, including about 30 missions in total. The first campaign includes the Spanish and the second tells the story of the Indian tribes. The last is a chronicle of an English family through the ages, beginning with their time as colonists, spanning the American Revolution, and ending with their immigration to settle the West.
Each faction in "No Man's Land" has many combat units, some of which are unique, while others are slightly different. For example, only the United Kingdom can produce attack dogs. Although these attack dogs do not have many attacks, they can cause great damage to all types of infantry. Both Indian tribes could make spear warriors, but the spears of Woodland Indians were used for fighting in melee, while the spears of Prairie Indians were used for throwing. All arms in the game can gain experience points through combat, and each upgrade will become more powerful (gaining attack points and causing greater damage).
The buildings of different factions in the game also have their own styles. Settlers' buildings in the West resembled swing log houses, while Spanish buildings appear to have used more stone and adobe. There are also some functional differences here. For example, the conical tents of the Prairie Indians can be folded up and moved to other areas on the map. Prairie Indians could even create tree-like observation posts. Such structures can even hide two rows of soldiers to ambush an unsuspecting enemy.
Plagues and Spirits
Like "America", "No Man's Land" also allows certain troop types to ride on horseback. Infantry equipped with horses can move faster and have an advantage over soldiers on foot. Patriots and settlers could produce their own horses to equip their troops, and Indians would find wild horses near their tribes or simply steal them. "No Man's Land" allows the use of enemy horses. Dead cavalry will fall off their horses, leaving the horses free for use by any nearby infantry, provided that the infantry has the ability to ride a horse.
The graphics of "No Man's Land" built on a 3D engine are ideal for displaying dense jungles, snowy forests, and desolate overgrown deserts. Every building, unit, and tree casts a shadow on the ground, while bodies of water also exhibit considerable transparency. The fish and sharks in the ocean, and the birds of prey soaring on the grassland are all very effective. Other animals such as panthers, stags or bears from the forest can pose a threat to your farmers, but they can also be hunted for food.
The battle animations feature many fine visual details, such as the smoke from a Mauser gun or the instantaneous flash of a cannon. European soldiers would use a ramrod to load the ammunition, while the Indians would notch the grooves on a new arrow. Troops will leave footprints on soft sand or snow, and the footprints will gradually fade away. The visuals of the game are very good when the camera is zoomed out, but when the camera is zoomed in, some texture and detail flaws are exposed.
Unfortunately, our demo version doesn't yet have the features that set No Man's Land apart from other RTS games on the market. Including computer-controlled bounty hunters who you can hire to assassinate elite enemy units. We also weren't able to test the game's anti-upgrade research, which makes your enemies less powerful in the short term. Plague, for example, can slow down the enemy's food production. Another anti-upgrade item, Spirits, can temporarily reduce the enemy's combat efficiency.
For those real-time strategy players who are tired of the various fantasy, modern, and science fiction themes that are popular today, what we have seen of "No Man's Land" does provide many novel and unique things. .
