How many American consulates are there in China?

There are five in all. They are: American Consulate General in Chengdu, American Consulate General in Guangzhou, American Consulate General in Shanghai, American Consulate General in Shenyang and American Consulate General in Wuhan.

1. The US Consulate General in Chengdu opened on June 1985,1October 16, and moved from Jinjiang Hotel to the existing building at No.4 Consulate Road on August 2, 1993, located in the south of downtown Chengdu.

Chengdu Territory consists of Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, Xizang Autonomous Region and Chongqing. The consulate is open from 8: 00 a.m. to 5: 00 p.m. from Monday to Friday, and is closed during American and local festivals.

2. The US Consulate General in Guangzhou officially opened on August 3rd1,1979, but as early as the end of18th century, the US established a consulate in Guangzhou.

The US Consulate General in Guangzhou serves four provinces and regions-Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi and Hainan. The total local population of the consular district exceeds 204 million, among which the population of 44 cities exceeds1000000. This area was once called the "world factory", and now it is transforming from labor-intensive light industry to advanced machinery manufacturing and technological innovation.

3. US Consulate General in Shanghai The US Consulate General in Shanghai is located in the commercial and financial center of China, including employees from the State Council, the Ministry of Commerce and the Ministry of Agriculture, with a total population of over 2,654,387+0.7 million.

The number of non-immigrant visas issued by the visa office of the Consulate General ranks third among American embassies and consulates in the world. In addition, the American Citizen Service (ACS) of the Consulate General provides services to 40,000 American citizens living in the consular district and nearly 1.5 million American tourists visiting the region every year.

4. The US Consulate General in Shenyang is located in the northeast of China, and the consular district in Shenyang consists of Liaoning Province, Jilin Province and Heilongjiang Province. The work of the Consulate General is mainly to meet the needs of American citizens and American companies in the consular district, and at the same time to promote the realization of the diplomatic goals of the US government. The consulate has deepened the relationship between the United States and China in consular, commercial, economic, political, cultural and educational fields.

5. The US Consulate General in Wuhan reopened in 2008 after the United States and China signed an agreement to establish a consulate. From 186 1 to 1949 before its closure, the United States set up a consulate in Hankou, Wuhan.

During World War II, Hankou Consulate briefly served as the American Embassy in China. At present, the Consulate General mainly provides emergency services to American citizens in the consular area, promotes trade and business cooperation between the United States and central China, and expands cultural and educational exchanges between the United States and central China.

The extended information embassy represents the interests of the whole country and is fully responsible for the relations between the two countries. The curator is an ambassador appointed by the head of state and performs his duties as a representative of the head of state. The primary duty of the embassy is to represent the sending country and promote political relations between the two countries, followed by promoting economic, cultural, educational and scientific relations. The embassy also has consular functions.

Promoting relations between the two countries and non-governmental exchanges is an important duty of the consulate, but its main duty is consular work, such as safeguarding the legitimate rights and interests of its citizens and legal persons, issuing or extending passports for its citizens and issuing visas for foreign citizens.

The duties of the embassy cover all areas of the host country, and the consulate is only responsible for the areas under its jurisdiction. Embassies are usually under the direct leadership of the government and the diplomatic department, while consulates usually accept the dual leadership of the diplomatic department and the embassy of the host country. Many countries have only embassies and no consulates in most countries.

Whether or not to set up a consulate and what level of consulate to set up mainly depends on the number of overseas Chinese, consular business and the importance of the region, and in accordance with the principle of reciprocity. For example, China has an embassy and five consulates general in the United States, which are responsible for consular affairs within their respective jurisdictions. In some small countries, there are only consulates and consular officials in foreign countries. Today, China has 170 embassies and 98 consulates in 175 countries with diplomatic relations.
