Not exactly. There is a saying that the old Shanghainese is the concept of identity: a household registration book; New Shanghainese's concept of assets is: real estate license.

Basically, all the people who settled in the 1950s were old Shanghainese, while all the people who immigrated after 1980s were actually new Shanghainese. Of course, compared with those who immigrated after 1990s and 20th century, they are the older generation.
