History of the East Side
Before and after the opening of Hong Kong, the early population in this area was mainly concentrated in Chai Wan, and then expanded to Shau Kei Wan. The population was mainly fishermen. After World War II, with the influx of new immigrants from Shanghai, the population of North Point began to become more and more. The new immigrant population is mainly concentrated in Chunyang Street, Jiahua Road and Mabao Road. In the1980s, the new immigrant population mainly came from Fujian.
Before there were district boards, the present Eastern District was divided into North Point and Shau Kei Wan according to the boundaries of the then Urban Council. Now Causeway Bay East is outside North Point.
On the other hand, in 1969, the Eastern District was divided according to the plan of the District Officer, including the eastern part of the current Southern District (Stanley and Shek O), until the establishment of the Southern District in 198 1.
As the dominant military force in the19th century was mainly naval force, the British colonial government at that time chose Victoria City as the central and western district, and Chai Wan was in danger of being attacked by pirates on the east coast of Hong Kong Island, so even in the first half of the 20th century, Chai Wan was still in a backward position for a long time. It was not until the end of World War II that Hong Kong became more and more important. In order to deal with the housing and employment problems of residents at that time, the Hong Kong government, including China officials, followed the example of the British industrial revolution to promote the economy, and set up an industrial zone and public housing in Chai Wan, so that people could live and work in peace and contentment. China officials of the Hong Kong government also named the public housing Xinghua Village, which had a far-reaching impact on China people's revival and being masters of their own affairs in Hong Kong.
There is no longer the danger of pirate attacks in the eastern part of Hong Kong Island, and there are more employment opportunities on Hong Kong Island. Therefore, in order to meet the housing demand of Hong Kong people, the government and developers have been vigorously developing housing construction and supporting construction in the region in the 1990s, including various public housing, Home Ownership Scheme and private buildings to meet the different needs of the people.
It is precisely because of the progress of the times and the strength of the people that the eastern region has moved from a barren land plagued by pirates to a sustainable green city, from backwardness to civilization and from the past to the future.
