What does Sanxi area mean?

Hexi in Gansu, Dingxi and Xihaigu in Ningxia are called "Three West" areas. Sanxi region refers to Hexi region 19 counties (cities, districts) in Gansu province, 20 counties (districts) in arid region represented by Dingxi in central Gansu province, and 8 counties in Xihaigu region in Ningxia, with a total area of 380,000 square kilometers and an agricultural population of about120,000.
