Wu immigrants from Hong Kong

Compared with Cantonese and Minnan, Wu dialect is not particularly famous in modern times for three reasons. The first point is that there are many representative movies and songs in Cantonese and Minnan. The second point is that Wu dialect is difficult to learn, understand and popularize. Thirdly, Wu dialect does not meet the aesthetic requirements of modern people.

Let's talk about the first reason first. Cantonese and Minnan are more familiar than Wu, because in the 1990s, many famous movies and songs were written in Cantonese and Minnan, especially Cantonese. Many classic film and television works in the 1990s were originally in Cantonese, because those films were shot in Hong Kong, and Cantonese was spoken in Hong Kong. At that time, a large number of famous movie stars and singers were born and were very popular. Among them, Leslie Cheung, Anita Mui, Stephen Chow, the Four Heavenly Kings and others are the representatives, and of course those popular songs in Minnan are also very popular. These people became the idols of most teenagers at that time. Their idols speak Cantonese and Minnan, and their works are also displayed in Cantonese or Minnan. Of course, it will also subtly attract people to like and learn.

On the other hand, Wu dialect is difficult to learn and understand. Typical Wu dialects are Shanghai dialect, Zhejiang dialect, Suzhou dialect and Shanghai dialect, and Shanghai dialect is better. If you listen attentively, you can still understand some, but Zhejiang dialect is really hard to understand. If you are not a local, you have no idea what Zhejiang people mean when you listen to them for the first time.

Secondly, the accent of Wu dialect does not meet the aesthetic standards of modern people. Wu dialect has a characteristic that it is soft and has many tongue twisters, which is very different from Mandarin promoted by the country. It is difficult to understand and learn, which is quite different from what we usually say, so it is not so famous compared with Cantonese and Minnan.
