Zhu Yu's academic research.
1. Theoretical and empirical research on the urbanization model of China population since the reform and opening up.
Researcher Zhu Yu's work in this field is highlighted by his research on the important role of "local urbanization" in the process of population urbanization in China and the universal significance of this urbanization model in the residential transformation of developing countries today. Through the case study of Fujian Province, he put forward the concept of China's in-situ urbanization, analyzed the formation mechanism of China's in-situ urbanization, and pointed out that the emergence and development of in-situ urbanization is not only the role of China's special institutional factors, but also a new evolution trend of human rural settlements under the increasingly blurred urban-rural boundaries. He also combined with the research on the non-binary trend of the definition and classification of urban and rural population and settlements caused by local urbanization in rural areas, and drew lessons from international experience, and put forward some suggestions on establishing a new multi-index definition and classification method of urban and rural population and settlements in China. In recent years, combined with the international research on mega-city regions, he extended his research to other regions except Fujian, and analyzed the spatial development stage and mechanism of Shanghai, the largest city in China, on the basis of comparison with the mega-city regions in developing countries. The above work has been published in many SSCI source journals such as Development and Change, Review of International Development Planning, monographs published by the International Union for Population Science Research, monographs published by him in the United States, and authoritative domestic journals such as China Population Science. It has attracted the attention and quotation of international academic organizations, relevant United Nations agencies and authoritative scholars in related fields. He himself has also been selected into the urbanization working group of the International Union for Population Science Research, and the above work has also become an important part of the working group's work, which is considered "extremely important" and "very beneficial" by Professor Tony Champion of Newcastle University, the chairman of the working group. Richard Moreel, a famous geographer and a professor at Washington University, thinks it has "special significance". Professor john friedmann, a master of international urban and regional planning theory, and Professor Terry McKee, a famous urban geographer, also quoted the concept of "in-situ urbanization" in China proposed by Zhu Yu and related work in their published monographs. The World Population Report 2007 issued by the United Nations Population Fund also cited his and his research team's work in this regard in the form of cases.
In the above work, researcher Zhu Yu put forward a dual-track framework of "spontaneous urbanization" and "state-led urbanization" in 1999 to analyze the urbanization process in China. This study is of great significance to fully understand the urbanization process in China since the reform and opening up and to formulate corresponding policies. The research results were published in the Third World Planning Review (SSCI source journal), and his monograph was published in the United States. This paper was included in the book City: Key Concepts in Social Sciences, which collected 65,438+032 representative papers published in the world during the period of 65,438+0920-2000, published by routledge Publishing House, and recommended by Professor M. Pacione, a British urban geographer, in his urban geography textbook.
On the basis of the above work, researcher Zhu Yu compared the urbanization model of China since the reform and opening up with that of other developed and developing countries, and based on the new urbanization model of China, analyzed the limitations of the traditional dual economic structure and dual regional structure theory in studying the population urbanization in developing countries today. Based on the framework of binary analysis, this paper discusses the significance of China's rural urbanization research in breaking through the limitations of urbanization and regional development theory, and on this basis, makes a new evaluation of Friedman's "center-periphery" theory and McKee's "expanding metropolitan area" theory. The above work was published in Chinese and foreign publications such as Population Studies and Asia-Pacific Perspectives, and was regarded by Professor Peter Riemel, an academician of the Australian Academy of Social Sciences and a famous urban geographer, as an extension of McKee's theory of "expanding metropolitan areas".
2. Research on the pattern and mechanism of population migration and flow in China.
Since 200 1, with the support of related topics at home and abroad, and on the basis of drawing lessons from the theory and empirical research of international population mobility, researcher Zhu Yu has conducted many surveys on the migration mode and mechanism of floating population in cooperation with relevant government departments and enterprises. On this basis, he comprehensively revealed the important role, influencing factors, mechanism and policy significance of the floating population in China at the present stage. This is the first time to study the floating population in China with international circulation. In the above work, researcher Zhu Yu went beyond the analysis framework centered on the household registration system, and put forward a new analysis framework to analyze the floating population's willingness to stay in cities and towns in China on the basis of synthesizing relevant international theories, revealing the three-dimensional differentiation of floating population in the process of urban settlement, circular flow and returning home. On this basis, he challenged the traditional analytical framework that regards floating population as a one-way migration process, and deepened the understanding of population migration process in developing countries. He also drew a series of important conclusions in this research. For example, the problem of floating population is not unique to China, but is very similar to the phenomenon of circular population flow in many developing countries today. The two-way flow and detention of floating population in the process of migration is not only subject to the household registration system, but also closely related to the temporary migration needs of both supply and demand sides in China's current labor market. In the future, we must strengthen the analysis of the interests and strategies of the floating population itself and the users of the floating population. The floating population problem in China is not only the result of widening regional differences, but also an important way to solve the problem. On this basis, in recent years, he also organized a research team to expand relevant research into the field of social protection of migrant workers, revealing the uniqueness and diversity of social protection needs of floating population due to its migration mode, and on this basis, he put forward policy suggestions that social protection of floating population should not be limited to the perspective of "urban integration", but should penetrate into all aspects of its mobility process. In the above work, researcher Zhu Yu also linked international population migration with domestic population migration, and discussed the significance of this connection in regional development. He is one of the earliest scholars who studied this problem in the world. The above-mentioned work results have been published in the journals of Population, Space and Place (SSCI source journal), Habitat International (SSCI source journal), International Journal of Population Geography, Population Research and so on, which have aroused widespread concern. The related research results have been cited by UN-Habitat's State of the World's Cities Report (2008/2009) and important scholars in related fields at home and abroad. In recent years, he has further expanded his research field in the direction of international population migration, and has been invited to participate in relevant academic or consulting meetings organized by relevant international organizations and institutions such as the Global Commission on International Population Migration, the International Organization for Migration and the United Nations Development Programme. His achievements have been included in the monograph prepared for the United Nations High-level Forum on International Migration in September 2006, and in the authoritative literature collection in related fields edited by a university press in India.
The above achievements of researcher Zhu Yu have also won many provincial and ministerial awards in China. He is also a member of the expert group of Fujian population development strategy, and has played a key role in the study of Fujian population development strategy. Its research results have been adopted by the relevant departments of Fujian Province and absorbed into the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" for population and family planning in Fujian Province.
