Naqu is a prefecture-level city in Xizang Autonomous Region, located in northern Tibet and the hinterland of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. It is the source of the Yangtze River, Nujiang River, Lhasa River, Gong Yi Zangbo and other great rivers. As of June, 2020, Naqu City governs 1 district and 10 county, with a total area of 430,000 square kilometers. The municipal government is located at No.3, West Zhejiang Road, Sene District. By June 2020, 1 1, the permanent population of Naqu City is 504,800.

Naqu City is the "North Gate" of Tibet, an important part of the five pastoral areas in China, and is known as "Heyuan" and "China Water Tower". Generally speaking, it belongs to underdeveloped and backward areas. It is located between Tanggula Mountain, Nyainqentanglha Mountain and Gangdise Mountain in northern Tibet. The central part is located in the plateau and hilly area, and the northwest is at a higher altitude. The northern part belongs to Tanggula mountain area, the eastern part belongs to plateau mountain area, and the southern part belongs to the intersection of northern Tibet plateau and eastern Tibet alpine canyon. Naqu is located in the sub-frigid climate zone. Cold and lack of oxygen, large temperature difference between day and night, windy weather. The main rivers in the territory are Naqu River, Gongqu River, Moqu River, Caiyou River and Laoqu River. Larger lakes include Dazi Cuo, Cuo E, Nai Ri Cuo, Cuo Muruo and Cuo Tam.
