Republic of Suriname (Dutch: Republiek Suriname; ; Suriname Tongan: Sranan;; Saarna is located in the north of South America, bordering the Atlantic Ocean in the north, Brazil in the south, French Guiana in the east and Guyana in the west. It is a member of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), and its name comes from the local indigenous Surinamese. The country, formerly known as the Dutch Guiana, was originally a colonial relic of the Netherlands in South America. 1954 became an overseas autonomous province of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and 1975 became independent.
