A region called Acadia was formed and was inhabited by the French. Pierre de Monts established the first successful agricultural settlement at Port Royal in 1605. Over the next century, the British and French squabbled over the area, and control of the area changed hands until 1713, when all of Acadia was conquered by the Treaty of Utrecht. ceded to Britain.

Conflicts between Britain and France continued. The Acadians, settlers primarily from France, worked hard to convince both sides of their neutrality, but by 1755, the British decided that the Acadians posed too great a threat to their security. As time passed, some returned to their Acadian homeland.

In 1848, through the efforts of patriotic newspaper company owner Joseph Howe, Nova Scotia became the first British colony to win responsible government. Nova Scotia became one of the four provinces of the new federation of the Dominion of Canada in 1867. At the time, the province was at the forefront of the world in shipbuilding, lumber and the fish trade. The federation provided the province with funds to build a railway to Quebec City, opening the province's transportation door to the interior. The First and Second World Wars strengthened the importance of Halifax, the provincial capital of Nova Scotia, as a staging ground for convoys and a major port in the world.
