Why early American literature was neither American nor non-literary

Early American literature was neither written by Americans nor real literature. The reason why these works do not belong to the United States is because they were spread from England. Moreover, these literary works are not in the form of poetry, prose or novels as we know them, but rather tend to be an interesting hybrid style of travel narratives and religious writings. The earliest colonial travel narratives are heroic records of the adventurous attempts and frustrations of America's first settlers.
