Why is Trinidad and Tobago not a South American country?

In the football area, the American continent and affiliated islands are divided into South America and Central and North America and the Caribbean Sea. Trinidad and Tobago has been participating in football cups in Central America, North America and the Caribbean, including the Gold Cup.
