What will Liuting Airport be used for after it is closed?

Because the new airport is opening, there is no need for the old airport to open at the same time. According to the new airport construction master plan, Liuting Airport will be closed after the new airport is opened, and its final use will be determined by superior studies.

The purpose and related planning of Liuting Airport after its opening are still under study and preparation. The specific functions have not yet been determined, but it will not be used as a dedicated cargo airport. The new airport will be operational in the first half of 2019.

Liuting Airport

As of August 2017, Qingdao Liuting International Airport has two terminals with a total area of ??120,000 square meters. It has a runway 3,400 meters long and 45 meters wide, with 70 aircraft seats. The apron area of ??Terminal 1 is 184,000 square meters. According to information on the airport's official website in November 2018, the airport has opened 167 regular routes, serving 84 domestic cities and 22 international (regional) cities.

In 2019, Qingdao Liuting International Airport completed a passenger throughput of 25.556 million, a year-on-year increase of 4.2%; the cargo and mail throughput was 256,000 tons, a year-on-year increase of 14.2%; the number of takeoffs and landings was 186,000, a year-on-year increase 2.1%.

The Air Traffic Management Bureau of the Civil Aviation Administration of China issued a notice stating that Qingdao Jiaodong International Airport (Jiaodong Airport for short) is fully qualified for transfer operations and will officially implement transfer operations at 0:00 on August 12, 2021. Qingdao Liuting International Airport will be closed simultaneously.
