Where is the Mozi Sky Survey Telescope?

Mozi Sky Survey Telescope is a 2.5-meter-wide field of view telescope, located at Lenghu Astronomical Observation Base, Haixi Prefecture, Qinghai Province.

Construction started in July 2009+2065438. It is a "double first-class" astronomical platform jointly built by University of Science and Technology of China and Purple Mountain Observatory of China Academy of Sciences. The telescope has a main mirror with a diameter of 2.5 meters and is equipped with a main focus camera with 765 million pixels. Its core scientific goal is to search and monitor astronomical dynamic events and carry out astronomical observation and research in time domain.

The Cold Lake Astronomical Observation Base is located in Saishiteng Mountain, Lenghu Town, Mangya City, Haixi Mongolian and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province, with an average elevation of about 4,000 meters. Due to special conditions such as low vegetation coverage, thin air, less rainfall, good atmospheric visibility and less artificial lighting pollution, it has become one of the best observation points in Eurasia.

Research results:

In 2022, the first major basic research project in Qinghai Province, "On-site monitoring and pilot scientific research of astronomical scientific instruments in cold lakes", achieved phased results in conducting time-domain inspections and pilot scientific research of temporary cosmic sources such as gravitational wave events. The project undertaker, Purple Mountain Observatory, has carried out a series of preliminary scientific research based on the 2.5-meter wide-field survey telescope WFST.

An image processing pipeline system of SFFT image subtraction algorithm based on GPU operation is developed, and a data-driven method of long-term and short-term memory (LSTM) neural network is proposed, which can reconstruct the complete spectrum evolution of type Ia supernova spectrum observation sampled at any time, optimize the observation strategy of temporary source spectrum, save telescope time and alleviate the shortage of time-domain sky survey spectrum resources.

At the same time, by analyzing the data of space and ground telescopes, the gamma-ray bursts, thousands of new stars and important temporary sources that WFST may detect in the future are studied.

Based on the observation ability of WFST, a series of preliminary studies on the formation and evolution of galaxies have been carried out, and the observation strategies of different temporary sources such as supernovae and millions of new stars in different survey modes have been optimized, and the software and hardware systems of the remote control telescope system with automatic routine observation, follow-up observation and data processing have been established.
