Where is Songjiang District in Shanghai?
Songjiang District is located in the southwest of Shanghai, on the upper reaches of the Huangpu River, and about 40 kilometers northeast from the center of Shanghai. It borders Minhang District and Fengxian District to the east, Jinshan District to the south and southwest, and Qingpu District to the west and north. The district is about 24 kilometers long from north to south and 25 kilometers wide from east to west. The total area is 605.64 square kilometers.
Songjiang is located at 121°45’ east longitude and 31° north latitude, in the middle and upper reaches of the Huangpu River. The total area of ??Songjiang District accounts for 9.5% of the total area of ??Shanghai. The entire area is wide from the south to the north and is slightly trapezoidal. Songjiang was called Huating in ancient times, also known as Yunjian, Rongcheng, Gushui, etc. It is a famous land of fish and rice in the south of the Yangtze River. In the tenth year of Tang Tianbao's reign (751), Huating County was established. In the fourteenth year of Yuan Dynasty (1277), it was promoted to Huating Prefecture, and in the following year it was changed to Songjiang Prefecture. In the 10th year of Jiaqing in the Qing Dynasty (1805), it evolved into 1 prefecture (Songjiang), 7 counties (Huating, Shanghai, Qingpu, Lou, Fengxian, Jinshan, Nanhui), and 1 hall (Sichuansha).
The government was abolished in the first year of the Republic of China (1912), and Huating and Lou counties were merged into Huating County, which was under the jurisdiction of Jiangsu Province. In the third year of the Republic of China (1914), it was renamed Songjiang County. After liberation, the Southern Jiangsu Administrative Office established the Songjiang District. In March 1958, the Songjiang Prefecture was abolished and renamed to the Suzhou Prefecture. In November 1958, it was transferred from Jiangsu Province to Shanghai City. In February 1998, the State Council approved the removal of counties and the establishment of districts.
As of the end of 2017, the district’s permanent population was 1.7513 million, including 691,800 permanent residents with household registration and 1.0595 million migrant permanent residents. In 2017, the average life expectancy of residents in Songjiang District reached 83.36 years, including 81.34 years for men and 85.38 years for women.
