Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture originated from the Capital Junior Industrial School established by the Qing government in 1907. In April 2013, it was renamed Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture with the approval of the Ministry of Education. The school was approved as a master's degree-granting unit in 1986. In 2011, it was identified as a pilot university for the Ministry of Education’s “Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program”. In 2014, it was approved to establish a postdoctoral research station for “Architecture”. In October 2015, the Beijing Municipal People's Government and the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development signed a first-class construction agreement, and the school officially entered the ranks of the provincial and ministerial first-class universities. In May 2016, the school’s “Future Urban Design Advanced Innovation Center” was approved as the “Beijing Higher Education Advanced Innovation Center”. In May 2018, it was approved as a doctoral degree-granting unit, and architecture and civil engineering were approved as first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points.

Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture is a multi-disciplinary university with distinctive architectural features and a focus on industry. "Climate Change Research and Talent Training Base" and "National Architectural Heritage Protection Research and Talent Training Base" are the only architecture universities in Beijing.

The school has two campuses, Xicheng and Daxing. The Xicheng campus covers an area of ??123,000 square meters, and the Daxing campus covers an area of ??501,000 square meters; the total building area of ??the school buildings is 488,000 square meters. The school library has a collection of 1.529 million paper books, 1.85 million electronic books, and 52 large-scale electronic document databases. It cooperated with the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development to build the China Architecture Library, which is the first type of architectural books in the country.
