Tianjin Institute of Physical Education was established in August 1958. At that time, according to the "policy of popularizing higher education in 1-15 years and meeting the needs of the development of education and sports" of Hebei Provincial Party Committee, and in preparation for the first sports meeting of the People's Republic of China held in Beijing in September 1959, the People's Committee of Hebei Province decided to form Tianjin Institute of Physical Education in Tianjin, the capital of Hebei Province, by merging the former Tianjin Sports School and the Physical Education Department of Shijiazhuang Normal University, and at the same time transferring outstanding athletes from the whole province.

The task of the college is to train athletes, coaches, physical education teachers in some high schools and universities and higher-level physical education professionals. Li Gengtao, then vice governor of Hebei Province, secretary of Tianjin Municipal Party Committee and mayor, also served as the first dean. In January 1967, Tianjin was restored as a municipality directly under the central government; In October 1969, Tianjin Institute of Physical Education was placed under the jurisdiction of Tianjin from Hebei Province.

In the early days of its establishment, the school gathered a group of excellent coaches and athletes, with a high level of competitive sports, and the achievements in wrestling, women's diving, swimming, men's basketball, baseball and other sports have ranked among the top in China. At the first National Games, he won the championship of classical, freestyle and Chinese wrestling. Tuanbo Campus is located in the Health Industrial Park in the west of Tuanbo New City, Jinghai District, covering an area of 1,115.7 mu, with a total construction area of 388,6 square meters.
