Administrative division changes after the liberation of Anhui:

On April 15, 1949, the area north of the Yangtze River in Anhui Province was liberated. On April 20, 1949, all of Anhui was liberated, and two provincial-level administrative regions were established: North Anhui and South Anhui.

On August 7, 1952, the Northern Anhui Administrative District and the Southern Anhui Administrative District merged to form the Anhui Provincial Government, and the provincial capital was located in Hefei.

On April 14, 1955, in order to better manage Hongze Lake, Xuyi County and Sihong County in Anhui were assigned to Jiangsu. In exchange, Xiao County and Dangshan County in Jiangsu were assigned to Anhui.

In January 1966, the Anhui Provincial People's Committee was suspended. In 1968, the Anhui Provincial People's Government officially resumed its operations.

In 1983, Anhui implemented a city-governed county system and established eight prefecture-level cities: Hefei, Bengbu, Anqing, Huainan, Wuhu, Ma'anshan, Huaibei, and Tongling.

From 1987 to 2000, 9 prefecture-level cities were added: Huangshan, Chuzhou, Fuyang, Suzhou, Lu'an, Chaohu, Bozhou City, Chizhou and Xuancheng.

In August 2011, the prefecture-level Chaohu City was abolished. County-level Chaohu City was established, and the four counties in the first district under the jurisdiction of the original prefecture-level Chaohu City were placed under the jurisdiction of Hefei, Wuhu, and Ma'anshan cities.

On October 12 and December 3, 2015, the State Council approved the adjustment of some administrative divisions in Tongling, Anqing, Lu'an and Huainan cities in Anhui Province in two batches.
