What material is polyester resin?

Polyester resin is a general term for polymer compounds condensed from dihydric alcohol or dibasic acid or polyhydric alcohol and polybasic acid. Polyester resin is divided into saturated polyester resin and unsaturated polyester resin.

Unsaturated polyester adhesive is mainly composed of unsaturated polyester resin, pigments and fillers, initiators and other additives. The adhesive has the advantages of low viscosity, easy wetting, good manufacturability, high hardness, good transparency, high brightness, rapid curing under room temperature pressure, good heat resistance and excellent electrical properties.

Public structure

The raw materials for the synthesis of saturated polyester resin are mainly diols, diacids, triols, and also monohydric alcohols or monohydric acids. The most commonly used alcohol is neopentyl glycol, and its esters have much better water resistance than ethylene glycol and propylene glycol.

Trihydric alcohols are mainly trimethylolpropane and trihydroxyethyl ethane. The most commonly used aromatic dibasic acid is isophthalic acid. Because isophthalic acid is superior to phthalic acid in salt fog resistance, chemical resistance and water resistance, isophthalic acid is more widely used in polyester resin.

Aliphatic dibasic acids, such as adipic acid, azelaic acid and sebacic acid, are also used to synthesize polyester resin, among which adipic acid is more widely used. Most resins contain aromatic diacid and aliphatic diacid, and the molar ratio of aromatic diacid and aliphatic diacid is the main factor to control the Tg of resin.
