Development of Institute of Engineering Mechanics, China Earthquake Administration

The Institute of Engineering Mechanics was established in 1952 and formally established in 1954. It was originally named the Institute of Civil Architecture of China Academy of Sciences. 1954- 1962 Institute is engaged in the research of building materials, soil mechanics, engineering structure and architectural design. The main work is material test, soil test and research on new building materials. At the same time, focus on the development of reinforced concrete and prestressed reinforced concrete, earthquake engineering, structural safety and loess engineering properties and other research fields. 1962 was renamed as Institute of Engineering Mechanics, China Academy of Sciences. The research fields have also been adjusted accordingly, mainly including earthquake engineering, nuclear reactor structural mechanics, soil mechanics, impact and vibration, special concrete materials and their dynamic properties. 1970- 1984, under the dual leadership of the State Seismological Bureau and China Academy of Sciences. 1April, 1984, it was changed to the leader of the State Seismological Bureau and renamed the Institute of Engineering Mechanics of the State Seismological Bureau. In order to adapt to the rapid development of national economy and the urgent need of earthquake prevention and disaster reduction at home and abroad, earthquake engineering and safety engineering are determined as the main research directions. 1In April 1998, the State Seismological Bureau was renamed China Seismological Bureau and the Institute of Engineering Mechanics of China Seismological Bureau. In order to meet the needs of national construction, the Institute of Engineering Mechanics has made constant adjustments and made important contributions at all stages. Especially in the field of earthquake engineering, it is a pioneer of China in almost all aspects, and has made a series of important achievements, played a significant role in national economic construction and won a high academic reputation internationally. From 1978 to 2003, we won 308 scientific research awards, including 19 at the national level and 136 at the provincial and ministerial levels. Professor Liu Huixian served as the first director. After Professor Liu Huixian, Professor Hu Yuxian, Professor Xie Junfei, Professor Xie Lili, Professor Feng, Professor Qi Xiaozhai and Professor Wang Zifa successively served as directors (at the end of June 2003, under the direct leadership and organization of China Seismological Bureau, the Institute of Engineering Mechanics openly recruited the directors of the Institute of Engineering Mechanics at home and abroad according to the reform plan approved by the state. Wang Zifa, who obtained a doctorate in Japan and worked in the United States, was hired as the director after competition. )。 The current director is Sun.
