Zhang Xin's Preface to Game and Society

( 1)

The theme that runs through this book is: How can human beings cooperate better?

Society is made up of people, and society exists for and for people. As rational individuals, each of us has our own interests and is pursuing our own happiness. This is our nature, and nothing can change it. However, social progress can only come from mutual cooperation between people. Only cooperation can bring win-win and happiness to everyone. This is our collective rationality. However, decisions based on individual rationality often conflict with collective rationality, leading to the emergence of the so-called "prisoner's dilemma", which is not conducive to everyone's happiness.

Apart from personal interests, another important reason that hinders cooperation between people is our limited knowledge. Even today, although human knowledge about the laws of nature has greatly increased, and it has really been achieved that "we can spend nine days fishing for the moon, but our knowledge about human beings is still not enough for us to understand what is the best way to pursue happiness." It is relatively easy for ordinary people to accept the knowledge of natural science, but it is more difficult to accept the knowledge of social science. We are short-sighted, arrogant, narrow-minded and self-righteous. We only know what it is, but we don't know why, and we often don't know what our real interests are. It is our ignorance that leads to many conflicts in human society. Many seemingly conflicts of interest are actually conflicts of ideas. In fact, most shameless behaviors that harm others and benefit themselves are essentially the result of ignorance. Those who harm others think they are maximizing happiness, and the result is often "smarter than themselves", which harms others as well as themselves. Some people are kind and devoted to the happiness of others, but because of ignorance, they have also brought great disasters to mankind. Planned economy is a typical example.
