How to make lightroom run faster?
1. Optimization Settings of Import Process
① In order to improve the speed of importing Lightroom, we need to make some settings. In the "Gallery" module, click the "Import" button in the lower left corner of the interface to enter the import operation interface.
② On the right side of the import interface, you can see two modules: file processing and application during import.
③ Setting the "Render Preview" of the "File Processing" module to the lowest can ensure that Lightroom can render the preview in the shortest time when importing new photos. If you need to import hundreds or even thousands of photos at a time, this setting can save a lot of time (rendering time depends on computer speed and preview size).
④ Next, let's take a look at the "Apply on Import" module:
⑤ In the "Apply on Import" module, it is best to apply commonly used modification settings, metadata and keywords to the picture as much as possible. This allows Lightroom to present a preview that already contains these general settings. If you take a wedding, it may not change much, because every photo needs to be treated differently. If you shoot products or portraits in the same scene, you can apply your most commonly used modification settings to such photos when importing. This is equivalent to modifying all photos in batches during the process of importing photos.
⑥ If there is no suitable batch modification setting, at least the sharpness of photos can be set as a general setting. Because all photos need this kind of modification.
2. Use an appropriate cache size
① Enter the "Edit" menu and click "Preferences". Under the File Handling tab, you can set the cache size of Camera Raw.
② It is best to set the size of the camera's Raw cache to the average size you need for a job, and it is best to make it larger if possible. Lightroom will be in front of the camera
The Raw cache folder stores preview files of all the photos you are working on. This folder allows Lightroom to quickly read preview information to display preview images. The larger the cache, the more preview images can be stored. For example, suppose we take an average of 2000 photos for each job. We will keep the photos taken at work in a separate directory. The average size of a photo is about 10MB, so the size of 2000 photos is about 20GB(2000× 10MB). For security reasons, we added 5GB to the cache, so the final cache size is 25GB.
(3) If you have enough hard disk space, this size can be set larger. However, for users who use SSD hard disks, space is very precious, and it is necessary to seriously consider the cache size suitable for them.
3. Cache folder location
① If your hard disk has other partitions besides the system disk, it is recommended to set a cache folder under other drive letters. But don't set it in the mobile hard disk, otherwise it will greatly slow down the running speed of Lightroom, because the USB interface of the mobile hard disk is the bottleneck of transmission speed. If there is no choice, you can only use the system disk (keep the default settings).
4. Select the appropriate standard preview size.
①Lightroom will use standard preview in the preview area of grid view, slide show, print and Web module. Setting the standard preview size too high will not do any good, but will only slow down the response speed of the system. To adjust the standard preview, go to the Edit menu and click Directory Settings. Remember, the directory setting item is valid for each directory, so it needs to be set separately for each directory.
② For users who use the display with the resolution of 1920× 1200 24 ",the standard preview size can be set to 2048 pixels, and the preview quality is high. However, this setting may be too high for ordinary users.
③ If 1280× 1080 is used.
17 "display, the preview size can be set to 1440 or even 1024 pixels. The selection of standard preview size depends on the size and resolution of the display. For most people, 1024 pixels, medium preview quality is enough.
5. If it is not necessary, please close XMP.
In the Directory Settings interface, under the Metadata tab, uncheck "Automatically write changes to XMP".
Do not select this function unless you really need XMP files. After selecting XMP, every time you make changes to the file, the software will write the data to the copy file. When you edit photos one by one, it may not make you feel any different. But if multiple files are processed in batches, the processing time will be doubled. It is believed that 99% of users do not need to use XMP files.
6. Optimize Lightroom catalog
When there are many photos in the catalog (more than 10000), it is best to optimize the catalog. Enter the file menu, select directory optimization function, and select optimization in the pop-up window. The optimization process may take several minutes.
If you also use multiple directories according to different assignments, there is generally no need to optimize the directories, because there will not be too many photos in each directory. But you only use the default directory, so it's best to optimize it after a while.
7. Render 1: 1 preview before editing the photo.
Now let's enter the "Modify Photos" module. You may often see the prompt "Loading ..." in the "Modify Photo" module of Lightroom, especially when you enlarge the photo to full size.
This is because Lightroom is rendering a preview of 1: 1 in the background. The solution to this problem is to let the software render 1: 1, and then we can edit the photos. To do this, please return to the gallery module and make sure that all the photos to be edited are available. The easiest way is to select a photo folder to render.
Not all photos should be selected, but they can't be filtered out, in other words, they should be displayed in the preview area. You can turn off the filter.
Then enter the gallery menu-Preview-Render 1: 1 Preview. Select "Build All" in the pop-up window.
In this way, the software will render 1: 1 for each displayed preview recruitment. This process will take some time. It takes about 5-100 minutes to render100 photos, depending on your computer configuration and hard disk speed. If you render thousands of photos at once, this process may take several hours. You can do it when you don't need to use the computer. Although it is time-consuming, rendering before editing can save you from waiting in the process of editing photos, which is recommended.
8. Try to keep no more than 10000 photos in the catalogue.
There is really no reason to put tens of thousands of photos in a directory unless it is necessary. Many people only use the default directory, so there are many photos in it. Lightroom will slow down when the directory becomes very large. You can optimize the directory, but it is best to establish different directories according to certain categories. For example, create a new directory for each shooting task.
9. Free up hard disk space
Make sure that your hard disk has at least 25% free space. For the system disk, less than 25% of the remaining space will slow down the whole system. The usual recommendation is to keep 50% of the remaining space in each partition.
10. Defragment the disk frequently.
Make sure to defragment the disk once a month. If you have multiple hard disk partitions, you should organize each partition separately. Apple claims that Apple Computer
OS does not need disk defragmentation, but needs to reserve more free space.
Note: If you use an SSD hard drive, don't tidy it up! For SSD hard disk, defragmentation is not only unnecessary, but also reduces the life of hard disk.
