The new area is located at the junction of Yunnan, Guizhou and Guangxi provinces in the hinterland of Wumeng Mountain, the radiation node of Nanning, Guiyang and Kunming, and the southernmost point of Panxi-Liupanshui. It is an energy resource-rich area planned by the state in the 1960s.
