1935 was admitted to the National Hangzhou Art College to study Chinese and Western painting. 1938 went to Yan' an and entered the Fine Arts Department of Lu Xun College of Literature and Art to study woodcut. 1939 participated in the woodcut mission in Lu Yi and went to the anti-Japanese base area behind the enemy lines in Taihang Mountain. He was engaged in woodcut art creation in the Eighth Route Army and taught in Lu Yi, southeast Shanxi. 1943 to 1949, successively taught in the Fine Arts Department of Lu Xun College of Literature and Art in Yan 'an and the Fine Arts Department of North China University. During this period, he created woodcut works such as Five Heroes of Langya Mountain, March of Feudal Fortress, and Selection of Beans. 1949, has taught at the National Hangzhou Art Institute and the Central Academy of Fine Arts. The first and second directors of China Artists Association, the third and fourth executive directors, and the vice chairman of China Printmakers Association. Good at printmaking and color ink painting. Woodcuts such as Old Shepherd, Flying and Ode to a Martyr created since 1950s are all collected by China Art Museum. He has held many solo exhibitions. He has published Han Yan Prints Collection, Han Yan Paintings Collection and Han Yan Woodcut Illustrations Collection.
