Which province is Yingzhou City in?
Yingzhou is the old name of Chongming Island. Chongming Island belongs to Shanghai City. The administrative district on the island is Chongming District, and a small part of it is Qilong Town and Haiyong Town in Jiangsu Province.
It is adjacent to Qidong, Jiangsu Province across the water to the east, the East China Sea to the southeast, Pudong New Area, Baoshan District and Taicang City, Jiangsu Province to the southwest across the river, and Haimen City, Jiangsu Province to the north. It is shaped like a spring silkworm, long from east to west and narrow from north to south. Next to it are Hengsha and Changxing islands. The formation of Chongming Island is linked to the evolution of the Yangtze River Estuary.
Because the Yangtze River Estuary stretches to the southeast and Koumensha Island has a tendency to move further north, the location and shape of the former Chongming Island are far different from what we see.
In the long history, many sand islands moved northward or were washed away and disappeared. However, the development of Chongming Island today is at its peak. Chongming Island is also unstable, and even its district has been relocated repeatedly. In the eleventh year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty, there had been five major moves in Chongming District. During the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, the south bank of Changsha was rapidly silting up. Later, the local people built stone ponds and dams to stop the siltation trend, and the district city was able to maintain and stabilize.
Extended information
The origin of "Chongming Island" comes from a legend. At the end of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, after the failure of Sun En's peasant uprising, several rows of bamboo rafts from the rebel army floated to the mouth of the Yangtze River near the East China Sea and ran aground in the mud on the riverside.
These bamboo rafts blocked the sediment brought by the rolling Yangtze River and gradually formed a sand spit. This sand spit has not yet completely emerged from the river. It appears and disappears with the rise and fall of the river tide, giving people a sense of mystery. People said that it looked like a monster and a god, and that it was both "sneaky" and "obvious", so they named it "Sneaky Ming".
Later, the sand on this spit accumulated more and more, became taller and larger, and completely emerged from the water, forming a small island that was no longer affected by the rise and fall of the tide. Seeing its magnificence, people no longer regarded it as weird and developed a feeling of reverence. So people changed "Cui Ming" to "Chong Ming".
