Looking for Van Gogh's story
Childhood attached to painting
1853, a priest named Theodore van Gogh gave birth to a boy in Sandt Town, brabant Province, northern Netherlands. They named him Vincent Willem van Gogh, after the boy who died when he came out last year. In recent years, his father, Theodore Van Gogh, is a priest of Lorvian Sect in the Netherlands. He is honest and loyal and leads a quiet life in the country. Anna Cornelia Carpentos was born in The Hague. Her grandfather participated in the drafting of the first Dutch constitution, and her ancestors also served as teachers. It can be seen that Van Gogh's maternal lineage has a good family background. However, I have to mention that some of my mother's sisters suffered from epilepsy. From a genetic point of view, Van Gogh was sent to St. Remy's mental sanatorium in the future.
Van Gogh's mother Anna is a depressed and excitable woman. After losing her son, she never recovered, nor could she have feelings for her newborn son. The pain caused by his mother's refusal accompanied Van Gogh's life, but Anna passed on her love for the land to her children. She also teaches them sketching and watercolor painting. Van Gogh's paintings were praised at the age of nine and eleven. Van Gogh has five brothers and sisters, but only Theo, who is four years younger than him, has the closest relationship, and their relationship has maintained Van Gogh's life. Van Gogh was a stubborn and silent child since childhood. He takes Theo out to observe nature every day. He is a gentle child who loves nature very much. Theo is one of the few people who can understand him and is also his favorite person.
Many people in the Van Gogh family have been engaged in painting. When Van Gogh was born, his three uncles were all famous art dealers: his second uncle Haendly Vincent opened a gallery in Amsdam and later moved to Brussels; My uncle runs a famous big gallery in Amsterdam. Another uncle with the same name as Van Gogh first sold painting materials in The Hague, and in a few years he became a famous art dealer in Europe. At that time, the world's largest Paris gallery, the courier company, signed a contract with him. Van Gogh and his younger brother Theo first worked in their uncle's shop, namely the Gubil Company in The Hague.
Van Gogh lived in a luxurious villa with his rich uncles when he was a child, where there was a rich collection of paintings. Being in an environment with a strong artistic atmosphere, Van Gogh did not show any unusual performance when he was a child. His sketches such as Dog, Haystack, Bottle and Bridge before he was ten years old have been preserved to this day. From these works, we can foresee the toughness of Van Gogh's sketches in the future, but we can't see his personality yet. The sketch "Dog" is so decisive and accurate that some people doubt the authenticity of this work. Although Van Gogh grew up in a very poor life, his good painting environment made him full of kindness, care and sensitivity to nature, animals, flowers and birds, and even the bird's nest. These qualities influenced his life devoted to love, friendship and art.
At the age of fifteen, Van Gogh's life had a crucial change. Financial difficulties at home forced him to drop out of school, so he was employed by his uncle's Gubil Gallery in The Hague, which is the largest painting company in Europe. There van Gogh came into contact with paintings and sculptures created by the greatest artists in the world. A dazzling new world of art opened before his eyes, which was naturally exciting and pleasant for Van Gogh who left home for the first time. In order to work better, he often visits museums and galleries and learns to distinguish between good and bad art. Besides, he studies hard and has mastered French, German and English. Four years later, he was transferred to the Gubil branch in London. His work has been well received by people around him, and a bright future seems to be in sight. Van Gogh was in high spirits at this time, earning 90 pounds a year and occasionally sending money to his parents. Like the ordinary working class, he also bought a top hat. At this time, Van Gogh was full of young people's enthusiasm and vitality.
Second, the first love of setbacks
Twenty-one-year-old Van Gogh worked very hard in Gubil Company in London. He sells about 50 paintings for the company every day, although in fact he prefers to deal with oil paintings and prints. He admired Gustav Dole's paintings depicting British civilians. He has been a little eccentric and unsociable since he was a child, and some people even think he is eccentric and paranoid. But the landlord's daughter, ursula, changed his character, took him out of his narrow world and showed him the beauty of life. As a result, he became easygoing. Van Gogh in love, how happy he is. Petite Ursula is a nine-year-old English girl. Big eyes smile all day, delicate skin and her slim and active figure, like a euphemistic lark, keep singing around Van Gogh. Ursula and her mother, the widow of a Provence priest, opened a kindergarten in a small house in the back garden, which only accepted boys. Van Gogh sent a letter to her home. Every morning, Van Gogh knows that even in his dreams, he has been expecting ursula's gentle call with a London accent: "mr van gogh, it's time to wake up." Then all day, no matter how unhappy and annoying Van Gogh was, he would throw them away.
However, this beautiful and desirable love is Van Gogh's own wishful thinking. When he got up the courage to confess his love to ursula, he was unexpectedly rejected by what he called a "doll angel" because she was engaged to the guest who rented Van Gogh's present house a year ago. Van Gogh asked her to reconsider, but to no avail, this wooden Dutch youth was nothing but a "red-haired fool". So no one came to wake him up from the next day, and there was no delicious breakfast and happy mood. Later, he went to ask ursula's mother to marry him, but he quarreled with her for no reason. When they wanted to go home and visit his relatives, they even asked him to find another place to live. This made Van Gogh very angry and heartbroken. He threw away all the books, leaving only one Bible to turn to God. Unexpectedly, however, this did not quell his anger, but only pointed it at others: he kept quarreling with others, even with his employer, and even persuaded customers not to buy that worthless art.
The lovelorn Van Gogh returned to his hometown in pain. He wandered in the fields of the town of Sondette all day, staring at countless ponds on the wasteland. He sketched there alone. He thinks painting is his only pastime, because it can dispel the shadow of ursula in his mind. The pain of first love greatly changed Van Gogh's character, and conflicts between ideal and reality frequently appeared. Johanna once wrote: "When he came home from vacation, he was silent and emaciated ... as if the whole person had changed, but he still drew a lot of sketches."
Pain sometimes has a strange effect, so that he can keenly feel the pain of others. He thinks the Gubil Gallery is worthless. When a customer asks about a painting he sells, he will not hesitate to point out how bad it is. Van Gogh felt that only works expressing the artist's pain were real and profound. At this time, Van Gogh, who was more and more reticent, gradually turned to religion. At the end of the year before he left London, in his letter to Theo, he talked about how to stand up from setbacks and his future life goals and directions: "If you want to move in the world, you must first bury yourself, especially for the communicators of religious thoughts." He also quoted Renan, a religious historian, to show his intention: "People don't just live in the world for happiness, they must do great things for society, realize lofty ideals and strive to transcend vulgarity. Van Gogh was immersed in the sacred thought of transcending individual life and had no intention to engage in the reception work that art dealers should do. Even because of his eccentricity and willfulness, he offended the rich and noble. On the Christmas Eve of 1875, at the busiest time of Gubil Gallery, he left without saying goodbye and visited Ursula, who had always had a crush on him, and then quietly returned to his hometown alone.
The absence of my nephew brought some losses to the business of Gubil Gallery, and the local manager also complained to his uncle Vincent, who decided to put Van Gogh in the big exhibition hall of Portal Road. However, Van Gogh did not appreciate it. He calmly declared that he would no longer work in the Art Business School. Uncle was taken aback and deeply dissatisfied. He announced that he would break off relations with Van Gogh. But not long after, he found a job as a clerk for his nephew at Brewster Bram Bookstore in Dordrecht. This is the last thing two Vincent Van Gogh do to each other. But this job has only been done for four months. Brad, who was managing miscellaneous grains in Van Gogh's boarding house at that time, later recalled: "He often sat in front of the shop and didn't deal with the work in the shop. Instead, he translated the Bible into French, German and English and wrote Dutch on the bottom line."
Desperate, Van Gogh had to return to his hometown, and his father Theodore was promoted to be the pastor of Eton College, so after the summer, the whole family moved to Eton College. Father advised Van Gogh to go to Amsterdam to study theology, inherit his career and serve God. But in Van Gogh's mind, Ursula, who has not yet got married, still lingers. She is still in England, which makes his nostalgia indelible. So he asked someone to buy some English newspapers, and finally found a job as a teacher in Ramsgate from an advertisement, which only provided accommodation, no salary, and only four hours away from London. He teaches poor children Chinese and arithmetic, German and French at school, and occasionally takes them to the seaside and mountains to tell Bible stories like Jesus. Soon, Van Gogh transferred to hervas School to teach, but he was also unpaid. In order to collect students' tuition, he ran all over the slums of London. As a result, he got nothing, but made him realize the sad state of slums. However, he is happy. He thinks that as long as people are in England, Ursula is still his because she can feel him. When he imagined marrying Ursula, he no longer imagined her as the wife of a successful art dealer, but regarded her as a faithful and hardworking wife of an evangelist, serving the poor with him in the slums. He walks to London almost every week. He is happy to go to London on business because he can pass by Ursula's residence. It was not until one day that he witnessed Ursula's wedding and saw the woman he had always loved fall into the arms of another man that Van Gogh's faith was finally shattered. He trudged back to school in the heavy rain, packed his bags and left England forever.
