In the process of WEDM, the electrode wire and the workpiece simultaneously make relative servo feed motion in the vertical direction and linear relative motion in the horizontal direction of X, Y, U and V. This method is called WEDM because it uses moving metal wire (electrode wire) as a tool to cut the workpiece through spark discharge between the electrode and the workpiece. At present, the relative cutting motion between the workpiece and the electrode wire of WEDM machine tool is controlled by numerical control technology, so it is called numerical control WEDM or simply numerical control WEDM.

The basic principle of WEDM is to apply a pulse voltage of 60~300V between copper wire and conductive materials such as copper, steel or superhard alloy, and maintain it at 5~50? M gap, the gap is filled with insulating media such as kerosene and pure water, which causes spark discharge between electrode and workpiece, mutual consumption and corrosion. Numerous pits are etched on the surface of the workpiece, and the discharge phenomenon is uniform through the monitoring of numerical control and the execution of servo mechanism, so that the workpiece is processed into products with required size and shape accuracy.
