Handan is a prefecture-level city under the jurisdiction of Hebei Province and a central city in southern Hebei Province approved by the State Council. By the end of 2002 1, the city had a total area of 12066 square kilometers, governed by 6 districts,1/county,1county-level city, with a permanent population of 9,366,900.

Handan is located at the southern tip of Hebei Province, at the eastern foot of Taihang Mountain, bordering Taihang Mountain in the west, North China Plain in the east and Shanxi, Hebei, Shandong and Henan provinces.
