Working in Canada also depends on contacts

Introduction: Steven

Male, born in 1982, from Shanghai, is currently studying IBM (International Business Management) at SEVECA College in Toronto, Canada.

I arrived in Toronto, Canada in March 2003. I have a deep understanding of the hardships of work and the difficulty of making money. More importantly, I am not afraid to start from scratch, try and experience again and again, and finally find my favorite job.

I found my first job through connections.

From June to March, 2004, my first job was as a handyman in a Thai restaurant in downtown Toronto.

This job was introduced by the landlord, who is the floor manager of this store. I have lived for a long time and got acquainted with the landlord. For a while, I told the landlord that I had nothing to do and wanted to find a job to fight. She helped me find this Thai restaurant at once. In fact, Canada is very concerned about contacts, which seems to be very similar to China. Only here, all relationships are called recommendations, and gifts are not needed. Jobs introduced by acquaintances are generally better. Like my job, the salary is also considerable: my basic salary is 6 Canadian dollars per hour (1 Canadian dollars is equivalent to 7 yuan RMB), and then six waiters give me a tip subsidy of 6 Canadian dollars per day. Because customers usually tip waiters, I can't get tips as a handyman, so the boss asked them to subsidize me for the sake of my landlord. Plus some other income, my daily salary is about 130 to 140 Canadian dollars, and at most it is 160 Canadian dollars, which is a good treatment for our international students. If the landlord hadn't recommended me, it wouldn't be easy for international students to find such a good job.

I have language classes during the day, so I work at night. From 5: 00 pm, I have been busy until the evening 10. My job is to wash dishes, wash dishes and help guests pack and pour water. A series of tableware, such as spoons and forks, are all silver and need to be polished. Originally, everyone had a clear division of labor, but at first the waiters there bullied me and asked me to do everything when they saw that I was a newcomer. Later, the boss came out to talk and said who would do the task. Gradually, everyone began to respect each other.

I just arrived in Canada at that time, and the language class was more difficult for me. And the Thai restaurant is far from my residence. Go home by bus and then transfer to the subway. Every time I get home from a fight, the clock has rung 12. After two months in this job, I hesitated several times and finally chose to give up.

It is difficult to find a good job without a car.

August to June, 2004 165438+ 10 is the holiday after language class. Among the international students, some have returned to China and some have worked. I chose the latter. Before looking for a second job, I was worried that it might be difficult for me to find a job as good as my first job without the care of my landlord.

I contacted my agent. When looking for a job in Canada, the intermediary may be another layer of the most convenient and efficient network. It's just that I didn't have a car at that time, and the agent introduced me to a manual job and charged me an agency fee of 10% of my first month's salary. In Toronto, basically everyone has their own car. There are few buses and the speed is slow, so many recruitment conditions are to have their own cars.

This is a furniture store jointly operated by Pakistan and Iran. Start work every morning 10 and finish at 5 pm. I mainly work as a porter in a furniture warehouse. Every time the goods arrive, another worker and I have to unload a big container full of furniture. We are going to move all the furniture into the warehouse. The other is to paint the furniture, and then move the painted furniture to the open space outside to dry. The open space over there is so big that we have to move dozens of times to fill up the furniture. I have estimated that every time we move these painted furniture, it is equivalent to walking 5 thousand meters.

The salary of this job is 8 Canadian dollars per hour, and there is no tip. Because it is manual labor, fatigue is inevitable, but generally speaking, it is relatively stable. And the colleagues inside are also very friendly. As long as I finish my work, it will be easier. I finally no longer regret giving up my first job, because I know I am still young and I am not afraid to start from scratch.

Solve arthritis.

After the formal class, I gradually entered the state. There was a time when I only had classes in the afternoon and was bored in the morning, so I planned to find another job and start all over again.

From March to April, 2005, I took the third job. I found the same organization because we have some familiarity and trust. This time, after they told me the general work situation, I contacted myself, so they also confiscated my agency fee. However, unexpectedly, this job is more tiring.

I helped an old French man deliver newspapers and leaflets, mainly small advertisements, such as the discount of this store and the opening of that store. Every morning around six or seven o'clock, before dawn, we gather in a community, and then each person is responsible for an area and distributes leaflets. It was winter, it was raining heavily outside, and the temperature dropped to MINUS 30 degrees Celsius. We had to hand out leaflets from door to door. Some people welcome it, others reject it. We work like this for five or six hours every day. Most of the time, you have to walk waist-high with me. Because the salary is directly proportional to the number of leaflets distributed, we always insist on distributing as many leaflets as possible. Each leaflet is worth 0. 1 Canadian dollars. If you distribute about 500 leaflets every day, you can earn 60 to 80 Canadian dollars in one morning.

After working in this job for three weeks, I have physical problems. Knees in both legs ache faintly. The doctor said it was arthritis. So I waved goodbye to my third job.

My favorite job

From August 2005 to June this year, I delivered food at PIZZANOVA (a large local pizza chain). At that time, in order to facilitate my work and life, I learned to drive, got a driver's license, and spent 5,000 Canadian dollars on a modern small sports car.

Go directly to the pizza shop after class every day, and work from 5 pm to 1 1 pm, five times a week. In this job, I mainly earn tips. There is a tipping system in foreign countries, and people don't have to give it, but they usually give 10% of the takeaway. Of course, there are also particularly generous and stingy customers, mainly depending on luck. My basic salary is 6.5 Canadian dollars per hour, plus tips, my average hourly income is about 10 to 12 Canadian dollars, and my monthly income is about 1200 Canadian dollars. Moreover, the boss also provides meals, which I am very satisfied with. Although the cost of car maintenance is quite severe, it costs 70% of my salary every month, but the work is easy and the money is relatively the most. And there are several people from China who work there, and everyone is in tune and having a good time. I'm glad that I finally found the job I like at present.

After June, I went back to Shanghai for a holiday and said goodbye to this job for the time being. Soon, I will fly to Canada again. Of course, I will continue to work, continue to deliver pizza or continue to change jobs. Every time someone asks me about my work experience, I always say, "We are still young, so don't be afraid to start from scratch." The reason is, as I once heard an international student say, "The more you experience, if you start from scratch again, to some extent, you won't really always' start from scratch'".
