Horgos City belongs to People's Republic of China (PRC) (China), Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

This is a young and westernmost port city. Located in the western border of China, bordering Kazakhstan, five Central Asian countries in the west and inland provinces and cities in the east. It is the terminal of National Highway 3 12 and Lianhuo Expressway. It is 90km to the east from Yining, the capital of Yili Prefecture, and 670km to Urumqi, the capital of the autonomous region. The area within the external coverage radius of 1000km is the densely populated area, economically developed area and market center in Central Asia.

The place name of Horgos comes from Mongolian (Junggar), which means "drier camel dung" and can also be called "the best nomadic place". In the Tang Dynasty, the Silk Road branch line of Tianshan North Road was opened, and Horgos became an important post station on the middle section of the Silk Road. During the Qing Dynasty, six Karen posts, namely border checkpoints, were set up in Yili. Horgos, formerly known as Ni Kan Kade, is one of the Karen posts stationed in Solon Camp in Yili.

Located in Huocheng County, Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture, the border between China and Kazakhstan is bounded by the winding Horgos River, hence the name Horgos Port. On June 6th, 2006, with the approval of the State Council, Horgos Port was reopened to Kazakhstan and third countries. 1In August 1992, the Chinese and Kazakh governments agreed that the port was open to a third country and had the status of international combined transport. Now the third country has been abolished and is only open to Kazakhstan.
