The Historical Evolution of Guangzhou Brain Hospital

Guangzhou Brain Hospital was originally named "Huiai Medical and Epilepsy Hospital" or "Huiai Hospital". In memory of its founder, Dr. J.G. Kerr, Jia John changed his name to "John Kerr Hospital" when he reported abroad after his death. In 1898 (the 24th year of Guangxu reign of Qing Dynasty), only two patients were admitted on the first day of business, and the number of inpatients in that year increased to 1 1, 1904 to 63, 1909 to 2 17,/kloc-. At that time, there were at most four doctors and at least two. There are also head nurses 1 person, nurses 1 person, nurses 17 (equivalent to nursing workers) and about 70 other employees, so the total number of employees in the later period exceeds 100.

1927, due to financial difficulties, workers went on strike, the hospital business stopped, and the hospital board was unable to support it, so it automatically applied to the then municipal government to take over. A year before this, the municipal government had established a "Renaturation Hospital" in the urban area, and took over Ai Hui Hospital on 1 March, 9271day. The two hospitals were renamed as the first and second psychiatric hospitals in the city respectively. The first hospital was approved to accommodate 260 patients and 1 to 2 doctors. The second hospital was allowed to accommodate 400 patients, including two doctors.

1June, 935, the then Guangzhou Municipal Government decided to acquire all the original properties of Ai Hui Hospital, including the Second Hospital and Peiying Middle School. 65438+ On February 26th of the same year, the first mental hospital was cancelled, and the two hospitals merged and reorganized. The patients and public property of the first hospital were moved to the second hospital for reception, and it was renamed as the Municipal Psychiatric Sanatorium. The number of doctors admitted is 800, including 4 doctors, male and female nurses 1 person, 32 male and female nurses, doctors, nurses, workers, police and nurses in the hospital. Covering an area of more than 40 acres, it is basically the same as that in the early days of liberation. This is the most prosperous period of mental hospitals before liberation.

1The Anti-Japanese War broke out in July, 937, and 19381October Guangzhou fell. Before the Kuomintang Guangzhou government hastily withdrew, it entrusted the mental hospital to the Catholic Church in Guangzhou for safekeeping. The Catholic Church sent three nuns from Canada and other countries to take charge of the hospital. There are no full-time doctors, only more than a dozen male and female nurses, more than a dozen workers and porters. Catholicism managed for more than seven years until the victory of the Anti-Japanese War. During this period, the source of funds was almost cut off, and it was very difficult to barely maintain it with a small amount of donations and patients' own expenses. The life of employees is also very difficult. Many patients died, and the number of hospitalized patients dropped sharply, from more than 800 at the victory of the Anti-Japanese War to only more than 60. Because there is no record during the Anti-Japanese War, it is impossible to give a more detailed description now.

At the beginning of 1946, the Guangzhou municipal government of the Kuomintang officially recovered the hospital and operated it on its own. 1946 temporarily admitted 300 mental patients. In April of 1948, the number of inpatients reached 380, and in September of 1949, it dropped to nearly 300. At that time, in addition to the dean and medical director, there were four doctors, 10 more than male and female nurses and more than 60 employees. 1949 Guangzhou was liberated, and in the same year 12, the municipal army appointed someone to take over the mental hospital.
