How is the job of a crew member?
There are two types of seafarers. Ordinary seamen and officers.
Ordinary seafarers only need four and a half months of training. The tuition fee is about 8,000, including accommodation, training and examination fees, and teaching materials.
Two years of training for senior seafarers with a high school degree or above.
One year of college degree training.
There are currently two ways to train seafarers on the market:
One is to study through navigation schools. Obtain a seaman's certificate of competency. However, the issuance of a seaman's certificate requires a completion certificate and an internship certificate to be renewed. Those who have been trained in academies are free seamen. Free graduation certificate internships, certificate renewal, and shipboarding are all paid for at your own expense, but the cost of training is too low, and it is difficult to work on the ship later.
The other is targeted training, which involves training and learning through some agencies and schools. This kind of training is expensive. But training, internship, certificate renewal and employment are integrated. However, some illegal agencies and schools on the market have caused chaos in the seafarer market. Caution is required.
The life of seafarers has been effectively improved in recent years, but there is undoubtedly still some gap between the actual living conditions in China's land cities.
The term "crew" covers a wide range, and some distinctions need to be made within the industry. According to their different properties, they can be divided into state-owned crews and expatriate crews; according to their different routes and certificate levels, they can be divided into ocean-going crews, coastal crews and inland river crews. My answer today is mainly for ocean-going expatriate crews, so if there are coastal, inland river and other crews, please do not take the same number, because the treatment and life of coastal, inland river crews and ocean-going crews are quite different.
At present, the life on board the ocean-going crew dispatched by some regular companies is basically pretty good. Due to the entry into force of the MLC, crew living facilities, room size, food treatment and entertainment facilities all have minimum standards and are subject to inspection and supervision by the PSC of each contracting country. The daily meal standard is basically between US$7-11 (different companies have different treatment ), this standard can fully meet the daily dietary requirements of the crew, but as for whether they can eat well, this is related to the actual management situation on the ship. It’s just that it’s usually difficult to guarantee fresh vegetables and fruits, because it’s common for ships to be unable to dock for ten and a half days during a long voyage, and it’s not unusual to not see the shore for one to two months. According to MLC regulations, crew contracts must not exceed 12 natural months. Usually ranges from 4-10 months. You can go to the ground in most places at the dock. For young crew members, you can experience some exotic customs that are difficult for ordinary people to come into contact with, which can also be regarded as life memories.
Different from those on shore, ocean-going crew members are far away from society, family and friends, and are very lonely, which is unbearable for young crew members today. The network generally has signal only when you are close to the port. Although some ships are equipped with satellite network WIFI, most of them need to pay for it at their own expense. 100MB is about 100-150 yuan (reference number). Except for high-level crew members, ordinary crew members are reluctant to part with it. When sailing on the ocean, what can accompany the crew outside of working hours are stand-alone games, downloaded movies and TV, playing poker and chess at night, as well as table tennis tables and fitness equipment (regular companies prohibit gambling on board ships). Aside from the loneliness and being away from my family, it was pretty okay. It is relatively calm at ordinary times, but it will be more uncomfortable when the wind and waves come. The violent bumps and swings can even make you unable to sleep. When eating, you need to hold down the dishes and use your legs hard, otherwise the dishes will fly away if you don't pay attention. It might also fall down. Sometimes the storm can last for more than a week. People who are seasick are even more uncomfortable. When they are severely dizzy, they even want to die. But the vast majority of crew members adapt within a few months of being on board.
Salary on board (Chinese expatriate crew):
Captain/Chief Engineer monthly salary: ranging from 7,200 to 12,000 US dollars (the lowest for bulk carriers, followed by containers, large oil tankers, liquefaction Gas, chemicals and luxury cruise ships are higher, and the same applies to the following ranks)
First mate/first officer: US$6,500-9,000
Second mate/second officer: 3,200-5,000 U.S. dollars
Third mate/third engineer: USD 1,500-4,000
Cook/boatsun: USD 1,200-2,500
First class seaman/machinist: USD 1,000 -2000
Level 2 Sailor/Engineer/Waiter: 800-1500
Internship: Varies

Being a seafarer is naturally not a good job. It is also dangerous to work hard, and it is not easy to find a wife. Moreover, with the economic development of the country, offshore wages are becoming less and less advantageous, so it is not recommended for young people to rush into this industry. But for some young people with few options, it may not be a survival opportunity. But forget it if you are from a good family and have never experienced any hardship, because you won’t be able to endure it.
