The foreign exchange earnings from exports of a district in Chengyang District, Qingdao City, Shandong Province, ranks fourth in the province after Qingdao, Yantai and Weihai. This is also attributed to the district's processing trade. Of the USD 770 million in exports in the zone, processing trade enterprises accounted for 85% of the foreign exchange earned from exports. According to statistics from the Shandong Provincial Department of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation, in the first half of this year, processing trade exports drove the province's GDP growth by 2.1 percentage points.

In some southern cities, processing trade exports account for a higher proportion of total exports, reaching 90% in Dongguan, Guangdong.

According to statistics, there are currently more than 140,000 companies engaged in processing trade across the country, with an employed population of 30 million.
