Ningbo Institute of Materials is a public institution established with the approval of the Central Editorial Committee of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, with a fixed staff of 15 and a mobile staff of 3 (including doctoral and master students), which is included in the support scope of the knowledge innovation project of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The site is located in Ningbo Higher Education Park (North Zone), covering an area of 24 mu, with a total investment of 3 million yuan, including 1 million yuan from Chinese Academy of Sciences and 2 million yuan from Ningbo. The construction area of the first phase is 48, square meters. The research fields deployed in the first phase are polymer materials and composite materials, new rare earth permanent magnetic functional materials, nano-materials and nano-technology, surface engineering and technology, information storage materials and energy-related materials. The Institute has started to recruit talents from all over the world, started research and development, and has carried out cooperation and industrialization in Industry-University-Research with Ningbo enterprises.

The newly established Ningbo Institute of Materials of Chinese Academy of Sciences is a comprehensive research institution integrating forward-looking basic research, applied research and promoting the transformation of scientific research achievements and scale industrialization. The Institute of Materials will devote itself to forward-looking basic research, applied research and system integration research of materials science and technology with great application prospects, build a first-class R&D platform, a technical service platform and a training base for senior professionals, and become an important base for scientific and technological innovation, talent training and high-tech industrialization in Ningbo and Zhejiang Province. The institute of materials implements the director responsibility system under the leadership of the Council. The Council is composed of representatives from Chinese Academy of Sciences, Zhejiang Province and Ningbo City.
