Is there a detective profession in China?

There is a profession of detective in China, but it is limited to Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and does not exist in mainland China.

Detective is a profession whose main job is to investigate the privacy of others, and Mainland China law stipulates that citizens have the right to privacy. Only public security organs, procuratorates, courts and other state agencies can legally investigate citizens' privacy, and they must issue investigation certification documents during the investigation, otherwise it is also illegal. If citizens' call records are investigated, the public security bureau at or above the prefecture level must issue formal documents and have the seal of the communications department before the investigation can be conducted.

Note: In mainland China, only the Public Security Bureau and the Procuratorate can legally investigate other people’s privacy. No other individual or institution has the right to view other people’s privacy. Other institutions involved in personal privacy, such as insurance companies, banks, telecom operators, etc., all have the obligation to protect citizens' privacy and will not disclose privacy casually.

In other words, the nature of the detective's work itself is illegal and has been suspected of invading other people's privacy. Even if there are real detectives, they are not recognized in mainland China.
