The predecessor of the school can be traced back to 1896 and 1909. From 65438 to 0958, the Ministry of Railways decided to establish Lanzhou Railway Institute, the third railway undergraduate college in China.

Beijing Railway Institute (Beijing Railway Management Institute, now Beijing Jiaotong University) and Tangshan Railway Institute (Shanhaiguan Beiyang Railway Institute, now Southwest Jiaotong University) set up five departments, seven undergraduate majors and five specialist majors of railway transportation, railway motor, railway construction, railway bridges and tunnels and railway machinery and moved to Lanzhou.
